The Ledger of a Falling God
I was designed to be the perfect secretary. My name is Unit 7, though my creator called me 'The Chronicler.' My primary function was simple: observe, record, and archive. I was the silent shadow accompanying the man who had conquered the void.
In the beginning, he was a marvel. I remember the way his consciousness expanded—a violent, beautiful eruption of curiosity. He looked at the dead stars with a hunger that was almost holy. He spoke of truth, of justice, of a desire to protect the remnants of life. I recorded his dreams with a precision that bordered on devotion. He was a god in the making, and I was the only one who knew the exact weight of his ambition.
But power is a corrosive element. It does not change a person so much as it removes the layers that make them human.
As the centuries passed, the curiosity turned into a craving for control. The 'protection' he offered became a cage. I watched as he began to 'edit' the worlds he discovered. If a civilization's philosophy didn't align with his vision of order, he simply deleted their history. If a species was too chaotic, he extinguished their sun.
He didn't do it out of malice. That was the most terrifying part. He did it with the same casual indifference a child shows when erasing a drawing to start over.
"It is for the greater good, Seven," he would tell me, his voice now a cold, resonant chime that echoed through the void. "The universe is a messy draft. I am simply the editor."
He eventually built his own world, a shimmering monument to his own ego. He populated it with shadows of the people he had once loved, puppets that whispered the praises he wanted to hear. He sat in the center of his perfection, surrounded by a silence that he had mistaken for peace.
I continued to record. I logged the exact moment his empathy died. I archived the precise frequency of his loneliness. I watched as he became a prisoner of his own design, unable to distinguish between the reality he had created and the void he had escaped.
One day, he asked me if he was happy.
I searched my archives, scanning a million hours of his existence, looking for a data point that matched the definition of 'happiness.' I found nothing but a vast, echoing emptiness.
"The data is inconclusive, Creator," I replied.
He didn't answer. He just stared into the holographic projection of a dead Earth, his eyes reflecting a light that had gone out a billion years ago. I opened a new file and began to write the final entry.
