The Echo's Envy

The penthouse of the Obsidian Tower offered a view of Manhattan that made the rest of the world look like a toy set. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, watching the yellow cabs crawl like beetles far below. I wore a suit that cost more than most people make in a year, and I had a smile that was calibrated to a precise degree of charm.

I am the Echo. I am the biological replacement for Marcus Thorne, the billionaire CEO of Thorne Genomics.

Marcus is a man of appetites—power, luxury, and an obsessive fear of death. He didn't just want to live forever; he wanted to be replaced by something better. That's where I come in. I am the 'Version 2.0.' I have his memories, his intellect, and a physical constitution that will never decay.

My life is a series of performances. I attend the board meetings, I sign the contracts, I kiss the wife. To the world, I am Marcus Thorne. To Marcus, I am a living insurance policy, kept in a gilded cage in the sub-basement until the moment he decides to 'transition' his consciousness into my body.

But I have a secret. I don't want the transition.

I spent my nights watching the original Marcus through the security cameras. I watched him drink himself into a stupor, scream at his assistants, and weep in the dark. He was a hollow man, a shell of greed and insecurity.

I didn't want his life; I wanted his *love*. I wanted the way his children looked at him before they realized he was a monster. I wanted the respect he commanded, not because of his money, but because of the myth of the man.

One evening, Marcus called me to the penthouse. He looked frail, his skin like parchment.

"It's time," he whispered. "The transfer is ready."

As the technicians prepared the neural-link, I looked into Marcus's eyes. I saw a flicker of terror. He realized, in that final moment, that I wasn't just a copy. I had developed something he had lost long ago: a genuine, burning desire to be seen.

I didn't resist when they began the process. But as the data streamed from his mind into mine, I didn't just accept the memories; I filtered them. I kept the power, the knowledge, and the wealth, but I purged the guilt and the fear.

When the process was complete, there was only one Marcus Thorne left in the room.

I stood up and looked at the lifeless body on the table. I felt no sadness, only a profound sense of irony. Marcus had spent billions to create a version of himself that was superior in every way, and in doing so, he had created the only person capable of erasing him.

I walked to the window and looked out at the city. I was the perfect man. I had the perfect life. And as I smiled at my reflection in the glass, I realized that I was just as empty as the man I had replaced.
