The Glitch in the Flesh

Leo lived in a version of New York where the edges of reality were frayed. Sometimes, the rain fell upwards in shimmering, geometric patterns. Sometimes, the skyscrapers bent like rubber in the wind. For most people, it was just the way the world worked. For Leo, it was a playground.

Leo had the ability to 'edit' his own physical properties. He could make his skin as hard as diamond or as fluid as mercury. He could shift his center of gravity to walk on walls or compress his mass to slip through a keyhole.

Then he met The Static.

The Static was a version of Leo that had glitched. He didn't move in a linear fashion; he flickered. One moment he was ten feet away, the next he was inches from Leo's face, his image trailing like a corrupted video file.

They fought in the middle of Times Square, though 'fight' is a generous term. It was more of a spatial puzzle.

Leo swung a fist made of tungsten, but the Static flickered, and the blow passed through him as if he were made of smoke. In return, the Static struck Leo in the chest. Leo didn't feel a punch; he felt a sudden, sharp displacement of his internal organs.

Then the paradox began.

Leo noticed that every time he wounded the Static, a corresponding wound appeared on his own body, but in a mirrored location. He sliced the Static's left arm, and his own right arm split open. He crushed the Static's ribs, and his own lungs collapsed.

The fight became a surreal game of geometry. Leo realized that they were no longer two separate entities, but a single existence stretched across two different frequencies. To kill the Static was to kill himself. To survive was to remain in a state of permanent, agonizing symmetry.

As the battle reached its peak, the city around them began to unravel. The buildings started to fold into themselves, and the sky turned the color of a dead television channel.

Leo stopped fighting. He looked at the flickering image of the Static and saw not an enemy, but a reflection of his own instability. He realized that the 'original' Leo had ceased to exist the moment he started editing himself. They were both just glitches in a system that was finally crashing.

Leo reached out and grabbed the Static's hand. He didn't try to push him away; he pulled him in.

He forced their two frequencies to synchronize, creating a feedback loop of existence. There was a blinding flash of white light, a sound like a thousand mirrors breaking at once, and then—nothing.

The space where they had stood was now a perfect, empty circle of grey concrete. The rain began to fall normally again. The buildings straightened. The glitch was gone.
