The Mortality Broker

Arthur lived in a penthouse of glass and steel, a transparent box that looked down upon the frantic hive of Manhattan. He was a man of optimization. He optimized his diet, his sleep, his investments, and eventually, his own mortality.

He had met the Broker in a private lounge that didn't appear on any map. The Broker was a man of seamless suits and a smile that never reached his eyes. He didn't deal in souls—that was too archaic. He dealt in "Life-Extension Credits."

"Think of it as a hedge fund for your existence, Arthur," the Broker had explained. "You have three credits. You can spend them to bypass any biological or accidental failure. A heart attack? A car crash? A sudden aneurysm? Just call me, and the event is deleted from your timeline."

Arthur treated his life like a portfolio. He used the first credit to survive a plane crash over the Atlantic, allowing him to close a billion-dollar merger that would have otherwise died with him. He used the second to erase a terminal diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, giving him another decade of power.

He became the most successful man in the city, a titan of industry who seemed immune to the laws of nature. But the Broker's fees were not paid in money.

"The cost is simple," the Broker had said. "For every event I delete, I take a 'Qualitative Asset' from your life. Something that makes the life worth living."

Arthur didn't notice at first. Then, he realized he could no longer feel the warmth of the sun. Then, he discovered that the music he once loved now sounded like static. Finally, he looked at his wife and realized he felt absolutely nothing for her—no love, no hate, just a blank, white void.

He had optimized his survival, but in doing so, he had deleted his capacity for joy, empathy, and passion. He was a perfectly healthy shell, a biological machine with no one inside.

On the day of his final credit's expiration, Arthur sat in his glass office, staring at the city. He felt nothing. He was the most powerful man in New York, and he was a ghost in a living body.

The Broker entered the room, looking as polished as ever.

"Time's up, Arthur. No more credits. No more hedges."

Arthur didn't beg. He didn't fight. He simply looked at the Broker and asked, "Can I buy back the feeling of love? Just for one minute?"

The Broker smiled, a cold, professional expression. "I'm afraid that asset has already been liquidated. It was the collateral for your first miracle."

As the Broker's hand closed around his heart, Arthur felt a sudden, sharp pang of grief—not for his life, but for the fact that he had forgotten how to miss it.
