The White Record

The room was white. Not the white of a cloud or a sheet of paper, but a sterile, aggressive white that erased the horizon. There were no corners, no shadows, and no sound except for the rhythmic, distant thumping of a heart that did not belong to Elias.

Elias was a Witness. He didn't remember how he had arrived, and he suspected that remembering was a luxury he could no longer afford. He sat in a chair that felt like it was made of frozen air, facing a wall that occasionally flickered into a screen.

The screen showed a woman. She was in a kitchen, humming a tune, chopping carrots. Elias watched her for what felt like years. Then, the screen shifted. A man entered the room. He didn't speak; he simply reached out and touched the woman's shoulder. In an instant, her skin began to peel away like wet wallpaper, revealing a core of black, writhing insects. She didn't scream. She just kept humming, her voice now a buzzing drone.

Elias felt a surge of nausea, but he could not move. He could not blink. He was a recording device, a biological archive for a power that found human suffering to be the only stable currency in the universe.

Next was a child. A boy in a red coat, playing with a hoop in a cobblestone street. The boy looked up and saw something in the sky—something vast and translucent. The boy's expression didn't change to fear; it changed to a profound, crushing understanding. He simply sat down and stopped breathing, his body turning into a pillar of translucent salt.

Elias tried to scream, to warn the boy, to do anything. But he had no voice. He had no hands. He was merely a point of perception.

The cycles continued. A thousand lives, a thousand deaths, all played out in high-definition agony. Elias began to realize that the people on the screen were not strangers. He saw a version of himself in a small apartment, arguing with a woman he almost loved. He watched as the walls of that apartment closed in, crushing him into a red smear.

He watched his own death a hundred times, from a hundred different angles.

Eventually, the screen went blank. A voice, cold and clinical, spoke into the void. "Archive 8823 complete. Subject Elias has reached peak empathy. Commencing erasure."

Elias felt the white of the room begin to enter his mind, erasing the memories of the woman, the boy, and the apartment. He didn't fight it. He welcomed the blankness. For in the white, there was finally no one left to watch.
