The Signal Remains

Daniel Reeves was a journalist who had been writing about nothing for ten years. His beat in Brooklyn was neighborhood stories, opening restaurants, closing factories, the annual block party on Fulton Street that nobody attended anymore. He was good at finding nothing interesting in stories about nothing.

Maya Thompson was a physics professor at a community college in Bed-Stuy. She taught introductory astronomy to people who had never looked through a telescope and mostly wanted to know why the sky was blue and what that bright star was in the east. She was good at making the universe feel close.

They met at a library reading, which was the kind of coincidence that happens when you spend your life in places where nothing exciting happens.

The signal arrived two months after they started dating. It was on Maya computer, an email from a colleague at a radio observatory in New Mexico, attaching a file that contained a pattern of radio waves that could not be explained by any known natural process.

It is a signal, Maya said, showing it to Daniel. From outside our solar system.

Daniel looked at the data, simple bars and lines, nothing more. From who?

That is the thing. We do not know. It is not directed at anyone in particular. It is just, being broadcast. Like someone standing in a field and shouting into the sky.

About what?

She smiled. That is what we are trying to figure out.

Daniel did not understand the physics. He understood people. And what he understood from Maya face was that she had found something that mattered to her in a way that had nothing to do with him. He had seen that look before, in himself, when he was reading something that made him feel like the world was bigger than his neighborhood.

He went back to writing his neighborhood stories. The restaurant opened on Flatbush. The factory closed on Empire. The block party was canceled.

Maya went back to teaching. The sky was blue. The bright star in the east was Sirius.

And the signal, simple, inexplicable, broadcasting into the dark, remained.

They never figured out what it meant. Not completely. Some of the patterns were cracked. Others remained stubborn, like a locked door in a house that nobody was sure anyone lived in.

But sometimes, on clear nights, Daniel and Maya would stand on the roof of their building in Brooklyn and look at the stars, and Daniel would think about the signal and the field and the person shouting into the sky, and he would feel something that was neither hope nor despair.

Just the quiet understanding that somewhere, somehow, someone was trying to say something.

And that was enough.
