The Zero Point

The room was white. Not a white of color, but a white of absence. There were no walls, no floor, no ceiling—only a seamless, infinite expanse of nothingness. And in the center of this void sat a single, obsidian button.

The Guardian had existed for eons. He did not remember his name, his species, or the world he had come from. He was the last conscious entity in the universe. Everything else—the stars, the galaxies, the civilizations, the loves and the wars—had been erased by the Great Collapse.

He was the custodian of the Zero Point.

The button had a simple function: if pressed, it would trigger a new Big Bang, restarting the universe from a single point of infinite density. A new set of physics, a new set of stars, a new chance for life to emerge and suffer all over again.

If not pressed, the universe would simply fade into absolute zero. A perfect, eternal silence.

The Guardian spent a billion years staring at the button. He possessed the "Omni-Memory," a psychic record of everything that had ever existed. He could relive the first breath of a newborn child on a primitive world; he could feel the heat of a thousand exploding suns; he could taste the salt of a trillion tears.

He remembered the heroism of the last survivors, the desperate love of the final couples, and the cold logic of the civilizations that had tried to cheat the void.

He saw the beauty of it all, and he saw the horror. He saw that for every moment of joy, there were a million years of agony. He saw that consciousness was a glitch—a cruel accident that allowed the universe to feel its own decay.

"Why should I do it?" he whispered, his voice echoing in the void. "Why bring back the pain? Why restart the clock of suffering?"

But then, he remembered a single image. A small, blue planet. A woman laughing in the rain. A child holding a handful of wildflowers. A moment of pure, unadulterated kindness between two strangers.

It was a tiny fragment of data, a speck of dust in the ocean of his memory. But it was the only thing that mattered.

The Guardian looked at the button. He thought of the silence—the seductive, peaceful void where nothing ever hurt and nothing ever ended. He thought of the eternal sleep.

Then, he thought of the laugh.

He realized that the value of existence was not in its duration or its happiness, but in the mere fact that it had happened at all. The universe had been a tragedy, yes, but it had been a tragedy that was *witnessed*.

With a trembling hand, the Guardian reached forward. He didn't do it for the glory, or for the hope of a better world. He did it because the silence was too heavy to bear.

He pressed the button.

In a fraction of a nanosecond, the white void vanished. A point of infinite heat and pressure erupted, tearing through the nothingness. Light, matter, and time exploded outward in a violent, beautiful scream of creation.

The Guardian was erased in the first wave of the blast. He didn't feel the pain. As his consciousness dissolved into the new fire, he felt a sudden, overwhelming sense of relief.

The clock had reset. The game had begun again. And somewhere, in some distant future, on some far-off world, a child would look up at the stars and wonder why they were there.
