8: The Resource Caste

In the Micro-City of Orizon, space is the only currency that matters. The "High-Spires" live in the upper atmosphere of a single soap bubble, breathing pure oxygen and eating synthesized nectar. The "Dregs" live in the viscous film at the bottom, filtering waste and praying for a leak.

I am a Fixer. I move between the layers, smuggling oxygen canisters from the Spires to the Dregs.

"The balance is shifting, Jax," my contact, a scarred veteran of the First Leak, told me. "The Spires are expanding. They're pushing the boundary of the bubble. If they push any further, the surface tension will break."

The High-Spires didn't care. They were too busy building monuments to their own brilliance, oblivious to the fact that their luxury was literally popping the world. They viewed the Dregs as a necessary biological filter, a layer of filth that kept the upper world pristine.

The revolution didn't start with a manifesto; it started with a pop. A single, microscopic tear in the bubble's skin. As the air began to hiss out, the Spires plummeted. The gold-plated towers crashed into the Dregs, crushing thousands in a rain of luxury.

I stood in the ruins, watching the survivors from both castes huddle together for warmth as the world evaporated around them. In the end, the bubble didn't care who was rich or poor. It just stopped being a bubble.

As the last of the oxygen vanished, I saw a High-Spire lord clutching a gold bar, trying to use it to buy more air from a dying Dreg. It was the most honest conversation I had ever witnessed. In the face of total annihilation, the gold was just a heavy piece of metal, and the air was the only thing that had ever mattered.

We spent our final minutes talking—not about politics or caste, but about the macro-world we had once known. We talked about the smell of rain and the feeling of wind. We realized that in our quest for a perfect, controlled society, we had forgotten how to be human.

The bubble finally vanished, leaving us as a few scattered atoms in a vast, indifferent living room. We were just a smudge of moisture on a piece of furniture, a failed experiment in social engineering that lasted for a thousand years and ended in a second.

I remember the look on the lord's face when he realized his gold was useless. It was a look of pure, unadulterated shock, as if the universe had suddenly changed its laws. He had spent his entire life believing in the power of accumulation, and in the end, he was defeated by a simple law of physics.

We drifted together in the void, two fragments of a broken world, until the last of our consciousness faded into the grey. We were finally equals, not because we had achieved justice, but because we had achieved nothingness.
