The Filing Error

The Station was a masterpiece of white. White walls, white floors, white uniforms. Everything was designed to evoke a sense of purity, order, and eternal purpose.

Arthur was a Level 4 Administrator. His entire existence consisted of filling out Form 88-B (Request for Resource Allocation) and filing it in the Great Archive. He had been doing this for forty years. He didn't know what the "Resources" were, or what the "Allocation" was for. He only knew that if the forms were not filed by 17:00, the sirens would wail, and the Efficiency Officers would arrive.

"The Great Filter is coming," the Senior Administrator had told him on his first day. "We are the shield. Our bureaucracy is the only thing standing between us and the collapse of the species."

This was the Great Truth. The universe was a hostile place, and the only way to survive was through absolute, rigorous organization. Every document, every stamp, every comma was a brick in the wall protecting them from the void.

Arthur loved the wall. He loved the certainty of the forms. He loved the way the ink felt on the paper.

One Tuesday, Arthur found a mistake.

He was auditing a file from three centuries ago when he noticed a discrepancy in the coordinates of the "Void-Shield." According to the original blueprint, the shield was supposed to be centered on the galactic core. But according to the current operational logs, it was centered on a random, empty patch of space four light-years to the left.

Arthur spent three months investigating. He climbed through the archives, digging through layers of dust and forgotten memos. He discovered that the error had occurred in the year 2142, when a junior clerk had accidentally shifted a decimal point in a coordinate entry.

The error had been noticed by the supervisor, but the supervisor had been too embarrassed to admit the mistake. So, he had written a series of memos explaining why the "offset" was actually a strategic masterstroke. The next supervisor had read those memos, assumed they were part of a secret plan, and added his own layers of justification.

For three hundred years, the entire civilization had been operating on a lie.

The "Void-Shield" wasn't protecting them from anything. There was no "Great Filter." The universe was actually quite empty and mostly indifferent. The only reason they hadn't been destroyed was that there was nothing out there to destroy them.

The terror, the sirens, the Efficiency Officers, the lifelong devotion to Form 88-B—it was all a reaction to a typo.

Arthur sat at his desk, staring at the corrected coordinate. He felt a sudden, overwhelming sense of lightness. The wall was gone. The burden of saving the species had vanished.

He looked at the blank Form 88-B in front of him. He thought about the millions of hours spent in the archives, the lives wasted in the pursuit of a non-existent shield.

Slowly, Arthur picked up his pen. He didn't correct the error. Instead, he wrote a small, neat note in the margin of the file: *The coffee in the breakroom is terrible.*

Then, he filed the document and went home.
