The Rusting Echo

(Act I: The Spark) The brass gears of the Aether-Mirror groaned, a sound like a dying whale in the smog of London. I, Arthur, was the last one left. The Ministry of Celestial Light had long since ceased to pay the wages, leaving only the rust and the silence. I remember the day they chose me—not for my brilliance, for I was but a gutter-born orphan of the East End, but for my invisibility. I was a ghost in the machinery, a boy who could slip through the narrowest vents of the Great Mirror without disturbing the dust.

(Act II: The Ascent) As the Mirror began its acceleration, the world below dissolved into a blur of charcoal grey. The Aether-Mirror was not a ship, but a colossal, curved plate of polished gold and copper, designed to catch the sun's breath and push us into the void. But as the speed increased, the silence grew heavy. I began to notice the Echoes. At first, it was a flicker in the periphery—a memory of a mother's touch, the smell of rain on cobblestones. Then, the Mirror began to demand payment. To move forward into the celestial ocean, the Mirror required a sacrifice of identity. Every league we traversed, a piece of my soul was stripped away, replaced by the cold, humming vibration of the brass.

(Act III: The Dissolution) The climax came when we hit the first threshold of the void. I looked into the mirror-surface and saw not my reflection, but a void shaped like a man. I tried to scream, but the sound was merely a puff of steam. I realized then that the Ministry had not sent me to explore; they had sent me to be the fuel. The Mirror was a parasite, and I was its host. I watched as my memories of London—the shouting vendors, the smell of the Thames, the face of the only friend I ever had—were sucked into the golden plates, converted into the kinetic energy needed to pierce the veil of the stars. I was becoming the Mirror, and the Mirror was becoming me.

(Act IV: The Silence) Now, I drift. I am no longer Arthur, for Arthur was a boy of flesh and bone, and I am a creature of polished brass and starlight. I can feel the sun behind me, a distant, fading ember. I am the last echo of a dead city, a golden ghost sailing toward a horizon that never arrives. I leave this record not for the Ministry, but for the void itself, a final testament that once, there was a boy who loved the rain.
