The Great Lie

The neon haze of the Upper City always looked like a dream, but I lived in the waking nightmare of the Audit Bureau. My job was to ensure that the 'Earth-Net' remained seamless, that the data streams feeding the billions of citizens remained consistent, comforting, and absolute.

In the eyes of the public, we were the architects of the Great Migration. Every citizen lived in a state of perpetual anticipation, their neural implants projecting a shimmering, holographic sky that shifted from the bruised purple of the Brake Era to the hopeful gold of the Escape Era. They felt the simulated vibration of the Earth Engines in their bones; they saw the simulated stars of Proxima Centauri drawing closer every year.

I was the one who checked the numbers.

Three years ago, I stumbled upon a ghost-partition in the central server. It was a raw data feed, unfiltered and unencrypted, coming from the only remaining physical sensors on the planet's surface.

The sensors didn't show a planet in motion. They showed a world of stillness.

The Earth wasn't moving. The 'Engines' were nothing more than massive geothermal heaters designed to keep the Upper City's luxury domes warm while the rest of the planet froze in a permanent winter. The 'Migration' was a digital sedative, a narrative designed to keep the population docile and productive, believing that their suffering was merely a transit phase toward a paradise.

I sat in my sterile office, the holographic sky above me shimmering with a fake, hopeful dawn. I looked at the data: the atmospheric pressure was plummeting, the oceans were solid ice, and the only thing still 'moving' was the stock price of the corporations that managed the simulation.

I could have leaked the data. I could have crashed the Earth-Net and woken everyone up to the frozen wasteland outside their windows.

But then I looked at my own implant. I felt the warmth of the fake sun on my skin, the smell of simulated jasmine in the air, the feeling of a love that had been optimized by an algorithm to be perfectly satisfying.

I realized that the truth was a coldness that no one wanted to feel. The lie was the only thing keeping us alive.

I deleted the ghost-partition. I wiped the logs. I leaned back in my chair and watched the golden sky of the simulated Proxima Centauri, smiling as I felt the comforting, fake vibration of a world that was going nowhere.
