The Lonely Eye

Station 7 was a tin can floating in the velvet void, three hundred thousand miles from the nearest human heart. Elias was the only one left. The other four crew members had returned to Earth a year ago, citing "psychological instability." Elias had stayed. He preferred the silence.

From his observation deck, Earth looked like a marble of sapphire and pearl. But lately, the colors were changing.

He watched through the high-resolution lens as the Maya prophecy unfolded in real-time. It started with the poles. The white caps of the Arctic and Antarctic didn't just melt; they vanished, as if erased by an invisible hand. Then came the violet haze. A strange, iridescent gas began to wrap around the equator, choking the cities and turning the oceans into a bruised purple.

Elias kept a log. He didn't use adjectives.

*Day 402: Sea level rise 12 meters. Coastal cities submerged. Signal from Houston lost.* *Day 415: Atmospheric oxygen drop 4%. Violet haze covers 60% of the surface.* *Day 430: All terrestrial radio signals ceased. The planet is silent.*

He spent his hours watching the lights of the cities go out. First the great hubs—Tokyo, New York, London—then the smaller towns, then the remote villages. It was like watching a Christmas tree be unplugged, one bulb at a time.

He felt no grief. Grief required a connection, and Elias had severed his connections long ago. He felt only a profound, clinical curiosity. He wondered if the people below knew they were part of a mathematical certainty. He wondered if they had fought, or if they had simply laid down and waited for the violet haze to take them.

One afternoon, he saw a single flash of light from the surface—a desperate, primitive signal fire on a mountaintop in the Andes. A tiny, flickering spark against a dying world.

Elias reached for the radio, his finger hovering over the transmit button. He wanted to tell them that he was watching. He wanted to tell them that from up here, their extinction looked like a beautiful, slow-motion dance of colors.

But he stopped. The silence of the station was too perfect to break.

He leaned back in his chair and watched as the last spark on the Andes vanished. The Earth was now a smooth, violet sphere, devoid of light, devoid of sound, devoid of hope.

Elias turned off the observation lights. He lay in the dark, listening to the hum of the life-support system, the only heartbeat left in the solar system. He was the last eye of humanity, and he had seen enough.
