(Minimalist Realism)

The rain never stopped. It fell in a steady, grey curtain that erased the horizon and turned the world into a series of blurred, indistinct shapes. Elias sat in the ruins of a cathedral, his back against a headless statue of a saint whose name had been worn away by the wind and the war. He didn't remember his rank, his unit, or the name of the city he was supposed to be liberating. He only remembered the cold, a deep, ancestral cold that seemed to originate from the center of the earth.

He had a small, leather-bound notebook and a stub of a pencil. Every day, he wrote one sentence.

*Monday: The mud is the color of old coins.* *Tuesday: I found a button from a coat. It is brass.* *Wednesday: A bird landed on my shoulder. It did not sing.*

He didn't think about the war, the politics, or the millions of dead. Those things were too large to be real, too vast to be comprehended. They were abstract concepts, like "justice" or "honor," words that had lost their meaning the moment the first shell hit the first city. The only things that were real were the things he could touch: the grit of the stone against his spine, the smell of wet wool, the rhythmic, stubborn thumping of his own heart.

He realized that he was a ghost in a world of ghosts. The war had stripped away everything—his home, his family, his identity, his very sense of time—leaving behind a void. But in that void, he found a strange, terrifying freedom. He was no longer a soldier; he was no longer a citizen; he was no longer a son. He was simply a point of consciousness in a silent, indifferent universe, a witness to the end of everything.

One afternoon, he saw another soldier emerging from the fog. The man looked like a mirror image of himself—hollowed out, grey, and exhausted. They stood five feet apart for a long time, neither speaking, neither moving. There was nothing left to say. The war had taken their language, leaving them with only the shared knowledge of their own emptiness.

Elias opened his notebook and wrote: *Thursday: I saw another man. We are both here.*

He closed the book and leaned back against the stone, watching the rain fall, content to be a nameless fragment of a broken world, a single, quiet note in the silence of the void.
