The Void Echo

The walls of the clinic were a white so aggressive it felt like a physical assault. Dr. Aris walked the corridors of the Alpine Sanctuary with a measured, rhythmic stride, his white coat snapping behind him. To the outside world, this was a sanctuary for the mentally fractured. To Aris, it was a laboratory for the soul.

"We are almost there, Elias," Aris whispered, leaning over the patient. Elias was a shell of a man, his eyes darting frantically around the room. "The enlightenment is close. Once we erase the noise of your identity, the truth of the universe will reveal itself."

Aris believed he was saving them. He had developed a protocol—a series of psychological triggers and sensory deprivations designed to strip away the "ego," which he viewed as a parasite. He called this process the Great Alignment. He believed that by erasing the individual, he could connect his patients to a higher, universal consciousness.

The patients trusted him. They had nowhere else to go. They endured the sleepless nights, the flashing lights, and the repetitive loops of white noise, believing that the pain was a necessary bridge to a world of peace.

But as the months passed, Aris began to notice a glitch in his own perception. He would find notes in his own handwriting that he didn't remember writing. He would wake up in rooms he didn't recognize, with the taste of copper in his mouth.

One night, he found a hidden file in the clinic's server. It wasn't a record of patient progress; it was a record of "Iterative Erasures."

He discovered that the "universal consciousness" he was seeking was actually a shared hallucination, a digital construct created by the clinic's founders to keep the patients docile. The "enlightenment" was simply the point where the brain stopped resisting the erasure.

More terrifyingly, he found his own name on the list.

Aris realized that he was not the doctor. He was Patient 402. The "clinic" was a loop, and the role of the "Doctor" was a temporary position given to the most successful patient to help break the others. He had been the Doctor for six months, and now, his time was up.

He looked at Elias, who was now staring at him with a look of pity.

"It's your turn to forget, Aris," Elias said, his voice sounding exactly like Aris's own.

As the orderlies entered the room to begin the protocol, Aris tried to scream, but he found that he had already forgotten the word for "help." He felt his memories slipping away—the smell of his mother's perfume, the sound of his first love's laughter, the feeling of the sun on his skin.

He was not being saved. He was being deleted.
