The Rain-Slicked Void

The rain in this city didn't wash anything away; it only smeared the grime. Detective Elias sat in his office, the neon sign outside flickering like a dying heart. He was a man of habits: rye whiskey, unfiltered cigarettes, and a recurring nightmare of a woman whose face was a blur of static.

He had been hired to find a missing girl from "The Void," a psychiatric fortress that loomed over the harbor like a concrete tomb. The client was anonymous, the pay was too high, and the air in the Void smelled of ozone and old blood.

"The girl is a ghost, Elias," the head warden had told him, his voice a gravelly rasp. "And in this place, ghosts are the only ones who tell the truth."

Elias pushed through the corridors, his flashlight cutting through the gloom. He found a room that shouldn't have existed, a space between walls where the screams of the past seemed to vibrate in the floorboards. He found a diary, its pages damp and rotting. The entries described a man who came to the Void not as a visitor, but as a prisoner who believed he was a detective.

"He thinks he's solving a case," the diary read. "He doesn't realize the case is the lock on his own cell."

Elias felt a cold spike of dread. He remembered the woman from his dreams. He remembered the fire. He remembered the sound of a door locking from the outside. He tried to run, but the corridors began to shift, the walls bleeding into a familiar, suffocating grey.

He reached the center of the Void, where a single mirror stood under a harsh, flickering light. He looked into it and saw not a detective, but a broken man in a straitjacket, his eyes wide with a terror that had no name.

"There is no girl, Elias," a voice whispered in his ear. It was his own voice, but stripped of all hope. "There is only the void. And you are its favorite toy."

The mirror shattered. Elias fell to his knees, the shards of glass reflecting a thousand different versions of his own failure. There was no exit, no client, and no truth. There was only the rain, falling forever on a man who had forgotten how to breathe.
