Case File: Subject A-67 Attending Physician: Dr. Lester Sheehan Facility: Governor's Island Federal Psychiatric Center Date: March 14, 1963

Subject was transferred from the Manhattan intake facility on March 1st, presenting with severe dissociative identity disorder following the homicide of his wife, Victoria, on February 14th. Subject claims to be "Teddy Daniels," a federal marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient named "Rachel Solando" from this facility. This claim is, of course, fabricated. Subject A-67's real name is Andrew Laeddis. He killed his wife after she murdered their three children. The "Teddy Daniels" personality was constructed as a protective mechanism approximately six weeks after the homicide.

The role-playing therapy protocol was designed over a period of eight weeks. The "investigation" framework provides Subject A-67 with a structured narrative that engages his pattern-recognition abilities while gradually exposing him to the truth of his own situation. The missing patient "Rachel Solando" is a fictional construct — a composite of three real patients, designed to trigger investigative behavior.

Dr. Gannon has been recruited to play the role of "Chuck Aule," Subject's supposed partner. Dr. Gannon is an excellent actor and has memorized his lines. The case file was fabricated with meticulous detail — fake federal badges, forged case documents, a fabricated homicide record for "Teddy Daniels." Everything is authentic except the man holding it.

The cipher was my idea. "The Rule of Thirteen" — Rachel Solando has thirteen letters. All the numbers in the cipher map to letter counts, family composition, and the number of children. The final number, sixty-seven, is the subject's patient number. It is the key to the entire exercise. When Subject A-67 decodes it, he will understand. Or he will not. The outcome is uncertain.

Subject arrived on March 1st. He is exactly as described in the files: mid-thirties, gaunt, with eyes that look like a dog's — sad and searching and desperate for something to believe in. He asked me immediately for the employee files. I told him they were unavailable. He threatened to withdraw from the investigation. I told him that was his right. He did not withdraw.

The storm hit on March 3rd. A Nor'easter that shut down the ferry and cut the island's phone lines. Subject and Dr. Gannon are now confined to the facility for the duration. This was not in the original protocol, but it works in our favor. Isolation accelerates the therapeutic process.

Subject has been working on the cipher. He is brilliant at pattern recognition — a skill honed during his years as a federal marshal. He will decode it. The question is not whether, but when, and what he will do with the truth when he decodes it.

I find myself thinking about him more than is professionally appropriate. Last night, I dreamed that I was him — that I was standing in a locked room, trying to solve a puzzle I had created for myself. I woke at 3 AM and wrote this entry by hand, because the electric light was too bright.

Subject decoded the cipher this morning. He sat in my office for forty-seven minutes, staring at the decoded message, saying nothing. Then he looked at me and said: "Who is sixty-seven?" I told him. He stood up, walked to the door, and opened it. He did not leave. He just stood there, looking out at the harbor, and I understood that he had chosen to face the truth. Or he had chosen to pretend to face it. The distinction may not matter.

Treatment conclusion: Subject A-67 (Andrew Laeddis) has been given the choice to accept his real identity or to "live as a monster." He has not made his decision known. I will continue to monitor.

I am writing this at 2 AM. My hands are shaking. I cannot remember why.

Subject A-67 is stable. Treatment concluded. Doctor uncertain.
