The Zero Equation

In the city of Omonoia, there were no coins, no credits, and no banks. There was only the Clock. Every citizen was born with a digital timer embedded in their wrist, counting down the seconds of their allotted life. Time was the only currency. You paid for your coffee with ten minutes; you paid for your apartment with a year.

The wealthy were the 'Aeons,' those who had accumulated millennia of time, effectively becoming immortal. The poor were the 'Seconds,' those who lived breath to breath, perpetually on the verge of zero.

Kaelen was a Time-Collector. He didn't steal time; he harvested it from those who had reached their limit. It was a clean, clinical process. When a timer hit zero, the body ceased to function, and the remaining fragments of biological energy were converted back into seconds for the Aeons.

His current target was a woman named Mara. She was a 'Zero-Seeker,' a member of a fringe cult that believed that the only way to truly be free was to reach zero voluntarily.

Kaelen found her in a small, white room, devoid of any furniture. Mara sat in the center, her timer showing exactly one hour. She looked at Kaelen with a smile of absolute peace.

"Why do you do it?" Kaelen asked, his voice flat. "You could have begged for an extension. The Aeons are generous to those who serve them."

"Generosity is just another form of debt, Kaelen," Mara replied. "By giving me more time, they would only be extending my imprisonment. I have spent my life counting seconds, fearing the end. But in the last hour, I have discovered the secret: the only moment that truly belongs to us is the one where the clock stops."

Kaelen looked at his own wrist. He had ten thousand years stored. He was an immortal, a god of the city. But as he looked at Mara, he felt a sudden, crushing sense of poverty. He had all the time in the world, but he had no idea how to spend a single second.

He stood there, watching the numbers on Mara's wrist tick down. 59... 58... 57...

When the timer hit zero, Mara didn't collapse. She simply vanished, leaving behind a lingering scent of ozone and a feeling of profound lightness.

Kaelen reached down and touched the spot where she had been. He felt a sudden, violent urge to rip the timer from his own wrist, to throw away his millennia of borrowed time and simply... stop. He didn't do it, but for the rest of his immortal life, he lived in terror of the silence that follows the final tick.
