The Grey Interval

The city had no name, and the people had no colors. Everyone wore the same shade of slate grey, lived in the same concrete cubes, and spoke in the same measured, monotone cadence. Man A worked in the Archive, a subterranean labyrinth of filing cabinets that contained the recorded history of every citizen. His job was simple: identify "deviations" and mark them for "correction."

Woman B was his sister, but in the city, the word "sister" was merely a biological designation. They shared a genetic origin, but they did not share a life. Woman B was a painter—an illegal act in a city where the only permitted image was the grey square of the State. She painted in the dark, using charcoal stolen from the heating vents, creating visions of a world where the sky was blue and the grass was green.

Man A found the file on Tuesday. *Subject B. Deviation: Chromatic Obsession. Status: Terminal.*

The Administrator, the voice that spoke through the intercoms of the city, had ordered the "correction" of Woman B. Man A spent three days in a state of frozen terror, staring at the file. He didn't know how to feel; the city had pruned the capacity for grief from its citizens. He only knew that there was a void in his chest where a memory of a laugh used to be.

He went to her apartment, a grey box in Sector 4. He found her sitting on the floor, surrounded by her charcoal drawings. She looked at him, and for a moment, he saw a spark of something—a flicker of gold in her grey eyes.

"I saw it, A," she whispered. "The interval. The space between the grey. It's beautiful."

"You have to leave," he urged, his voice a flat, mechanical drone. "The Administrator has marked you."

"I can't leave," she replied, smiling a sad, crooked smile. "I've already painted the exit. I just have to step into it."

The next morning, Man A returned to the Archive to file the completion report. He opened the folder for Woman B and found it empty. Not just the file, but the record of her existence. The name, the ID number, the birth date—all gone.

He searched the rest of the Archive. He found his own file. He read the entry for his childhood. There was no mention of a sister. There was no mention of a girl who painted with charcoal.

He looked at his own hands and saw a smudge of black charcoal on his thumb. He tried to remember her face, but the image was fading, dissolving into the grey of the walls.

He realized then that the Administrator didn't just kill the deviants; he erased the very fact that they had ever existed. Man A sat at his desk, stared at the grey wall, and began to draw a small, invisible square in the air, wondering if someone, somewhere, was remembering him.
