Absolute Zero

The world was a white room. Not a literal room, but a society so scrubbed of friction that it felt like one.

The Overseer did not believe in laws; he believed in Equations. Laws were suggestions, but Equations were inevitable. He had spent forty years refining the "Predictive Lattice," a system that could calculate the trajectory of every human life from the moment of conception.

"Uncertainty is the parent of agony," the Overseer whispered to the silent halls of the Ministry of Order.

Under his rule, there was no crime, for there was no impulse. There was no poverty, for every calorie was allocated with mathematical precision. There was no war, for the Overseer had calculated the exact cost of every possible conflict and found them all wanting. The citizens lived in a state of serene, glazed contentment, their lives as predictable as the ticking of a clock.

But the Overseer was haunted by the "Residuals"—the 0.01% of the population whose neural patterns refused to align with the Lattice. They were the glitch in his perfect world. They were the ones who wept without reason, who loved the wrong people, who dreamed of things that did not exist.

To the Overseer, these Residuals were not people; they were noise. And noise must be filtered.

He designed the "Great Calibration," a global event that would use a network of orbital mirrors to pulse a specific frequency of radiation across the planet. It would not kill the Residuals; it would simply "smooth" them. It would erase the jagged edges of their souls, turning their erratic passions into the same flat, grey line as everyone else.

As the countdown began, the Overseer stood on the balcony of the Ministry, looking down at the silent, orderly city. He felt a surge of anticipation. He was about to achieve the impossible: a world of absolute zero. No heat, no friction, no noise.

He pressed the button.

The pulse swept across the earth in a blinding flash of white. For a second, the Overseer felt a strange, electric thrill—a flicker of uncertainty. He wondered, for one brief, terrifying moment, if he had made a mistake.

Then, the pulse hit him too.

The flicker vanished. The doubt disappeared. The Overseer looked at the world and saw only a perfect, motionless equation. He felt nothing. No pride, no joy, no fear. He was finally as perfect as his world.

He sat down in his chair and waited for the end of time, a perfect, empty vessel in a world of absolute silence.
