The Zero Sum

The world was a grey smudge. No more cities, just clusters of concrete hovels and endless plains of salt. I am K. I don't feel much. I don't think much. I just follow the coordinates.

The Last Archivists paid me in calories and clean water. They wanted the "Holdouts" gone.

The Holdouts were people who refused the Upload. The Archivists had a digital paradise—a server where you could live as a god in a simulated Eden. But some people preferred the rot. They preferred the smell of salt and the feeling of a cold wind on their skin.

My first target was a woman who lived in a rusted shipping container. She spent her days sorting pebbles by color.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because the pebbles are real," she said. "The Eden is just a loop of a thousand perfect sunsets. I'd rather have one ugly, real pebble than a million fake paradises."

I shot her in the back of the head. It was a clean operation. No poetry, no drama. Just a body that stopped moving.

The second target was a man who had carved a library into a cliffside. He had spent ten years copying old books by hand onto scraps of plastic.

"You're erasing the only record of what it meant to be a failure," he said, not looking at me.

I shot him. The books caught fire from the muzzle flash. I watched them burn for a few seconds, then I moved on.

The third target was a child. He was the last one. He lived in a hole in the ground, eating insects and drinking grey water. He didn't fight when I found him. He just looked at me with eyes that had seen the end of everything.

"Is it beautiful?" he asked. "The Eden?"

"I don't know," I said. "I've never been."

I pulled the trigger.

I returned to the Archivists. They were waiting in their sterile white dome, their faces smooth and devoid of age.

"Is the physical world finally empty?" the Lead Archivist asked.

"Yes," I said.

"Good. Now, we can begin the final phase. We can delete the servers."

I paused. "What?"

"The Eden was never a destination, K. It was a filter. We needed to see if any human spirit was strong enough to resist the lure of perfection. If they were, they were too dangerous to keep. Now that the last resistor is gone, we can shut everything down. There is no point in maintaining a paradise for a species that has no one left to appreciate it."

The Lead Archivist pressed a button.

I felt a sudden, sharp coldness in my chest. I looked down and saw a small, silver needle protruding from my neck.

"You were a good tool, K," he whispered. "But tools are only useful until the job is done."

I fell to the floor. As my vision faded, I thought about the woman and her pebbles. I wondered if, in the final darkness, I would finally find one that was real.
