The White Room

The silence of the clinic was a physical weight, a sterile, humming void that smelled of ozone and bleached linen. Elias sat in the white room, his hands resting on a white table, staring at a white wall. He didn't know who he was, only that the doctors told him he was a pioneer in the field of cognitive restructuring.

"Focus on the sound, Elias," Dr. Aris said through the intercom. "The sound of the bell is the anchor. When it rings, you return to the present."

The bell chimed, and a fragment of memory surfaced: a scream, the smell of burning rubber, and the sight of a woman's face twisted in terror. Elias gasped, his chest tightening.

"Good," Aris whispered. "The trauma is surfacing. We are almost at the core."

Over the next few weeks, the sessions intensified. Elias began to remember his life as a psychiatrist. He remembered the prestige, the power, and the secret experiments he had conducted on his patients. He had been obsessed with the idea of "editing" the human soul, removing fear and guilt to create a more efficient human being. He had called it "The Great Refinement."

As the memories returned, Elias felt a growing sense of horror. He saw the faces of the people he had broken, the minds he had shattered in the name of progress. He realized that the "patients" in this clinic weren't there for healing; they were the remnants of his own failures, the ghosts of his ambition.

"I am a monster," Elias whispered during a session.

"No," Aris replied. "You are a god who forgot his own power. We are simply helping you remember how to rule."

Elias began to notice inconsistencies in the clinic. The clocks always moved backward for a few seconds every hour. The doctors' faces seemed to shift slightly when he wasn't looking directly at them. He started to suspect that the clinic wasn't a physical place at all.

In the final session, Elias demanded to see the "core" of his memory. Aris agreed. The bell rang one last time, and the white walls of the room dissolved.

Elias found himself standing in the ruins of a laboratory, engulfed in flames. He saw his own body lying on the floor, charred and lifeless. He saw Dr. Aris—not as a living man, but as a digital projection, a flickering hologram.

"The fire was the result of your final experiment," the hologram explained. "You tried to upload your consciousness into the network, but the hardware failed. You died instantly. What you have been experiencing for the last few months is a recursive loop—a digital purgatory designed to analyze the failure of your psyche."

Elias looked at his hands. They were beginning to pixelate, the edges of his existence fraying into lines of code.

"The loop is ending, Elias. The server is shutting down."

He tried to scream, but he had no lungs. He tried to run, but there was no floor. He was just a sequence of numbers being deleted from a drive. In his final moment of consciousness, Elias realized the ultimate irony: he had spent his life trying to edit the soul, only to find that his own soul was nothing more than a glitch in a machine.

The bell rang one last time, and then there was only the black.
