The Banquet of the End

The bunker was decorated in the style of a mid-century modern lounge: Eames chairs, a mahogany bar, and a panoramic screen showing the surface of the earth, which was currently a swirling vortex of neon purple and charcoal grey.

"Pass the olives, would you, Julian?" Marcus asked, leaning back with a martini in his hand.

Julian passed the bowl. "I think the radiation levels in Sector 4 just hit the critical threshold. We might lose the ventilation system in about twenty minutes."

"Dreadful," Marcus sighed. "Absolutely dreadful. Do you think the caviar is a bit too salty? I told the chef that the salt-to-fat ratio was off."

They were the last two survivors of the 'Resonance Project,' the scientists who had accidentally turned the atmosphere into a giant, vibrating tuning fork. The world above was no longer habitable; the air had become a weapon that could liquefy a human lung in seconds. But inside the bunker, the music was playing, and the drinks were cold.

The absurdity of their situation had long since ceased to be a tragedy; it had become a game. They spent their days debating the finer points of 19th-century opera while the sensors screamed about the collapse of the crust.

"Do you remember the day we activated the spire?" Julian asked, a small, genuine smile touching his lips. "The look on the General's face when he realized he couldn't actually 'aim' the frequency. He thought he was buying a gun; he bought a cosmic bell."

Marcus laughed, a dry, hacking sound. "The hubris of the military mind. They always want a trigger. They never understand that some things are just... occurrences."

A sudden alarm blared—a sharp, piercing tone that signaled the breach of the outer hull. The screen flickered, showing a wall of purple energy tearing through the steel doors of the bunker.

"Oh, look," Marcus said, pointing at the screen. "The end is finally here. Right on schedule."

He didn't stand up. He didn't pray. He simply took another sip of his martini and looked at Julian.

"I wonder," Marcus mused, "if the afterlife has a decent wine list. Or if we're just going to be converted into a series of sine waves."

Julian looked at the approaching wall of light. He felt a strange sense of relief. The tension of the last decade, the guilt of the billions they had erased, the sheer exhaustion of existing—it was all about to be resolved into a single, clean frequency.

"I suspect," Julian replied, "that we'll just be a very loud, very brief C-sharp."

The purple light hit the glass. For a microsecond, the room was the brightest place in the universe. Then, the music stopped, the martini glass shattered, and the two men became a part of the harmony they had created. It was, in Marcus's final opinion, a very tasteful way to go.
