The Predator's Mirror

Elias liked the silence of the Observation Deck. It was the only place in the New York Galactic Hub where you could forget that you were just a cog in a machine that was about to be crushed. He sipped his synthetic coffee, watching the data streams flicker across his retina.

The Devourer was no longer a mystery. After a century of fear, the analysts had finally cracked the code. The entity wasn't a god, and it wasn't a machine. It was a dying civilization, a swarm of starving remnants from a collapsed galaxy, driven by a biological imperative so primal it bordered on the mechanical. They weren't invading; they were foraging.

"They're terrified, Elias," his supervisor, Sarah, said, leaning over his shoulder. "The data shows their internal structures are decaying. They aren't coming to conquer us. They're coming because we're the only thing left in this sector that has enough energy to keep them alive for another thousand years."

Elias felt a cold spark of inspiration. For a century, humanity had played the victim, the trembling sheep waiting for the slaughter. But if the predator was starving, it was vulnerable.

He didn't report his finding to the Council. Instead, he began a series of clandestine experiments, using the Hub's quantum arrays to send a specific, modulated signal toward the Devourer. He didn't send a plea for mercy; he sent a lure. He encoded a sequence that mimicked the energy signature of a much larger, richer prey—a phantom galaxy that didn't exist.

The plan worked. The Devourer shifted its course, lured by the promise of a feast that would end its hunger forever. But as the entity veered away, Elias realized the cost. To maintain the illusion, the Hub had to burn through the Earth's core energy at an unsustainable rate.

By the time the Devourer was gone, the Earth was a frozen husk. The atmosphere had vanished, and the oceans were blocks of black ice. Humanity had survived, but they had become the very thing they feared. To maintain their new, fragile existence, they began to hunt smaller colonies in the outer rim, stripping them of every atom of energy.

Elias sat in his office, now the de facto ruler of a starving empire. He looked at the screen and saw a small, distant planet pulsing with life. He felt a flicker of hunger in his own gut.

"Prepare the fleet," Elias whispered. "We're going hunting."
