The Zero Sum

In the city of Omonoia, existence was a number. Every citizen wore a biometric band that tracked their "Social Utility Score" (SUS). Your score determined everything: the quality of your housing, the food you could buy, and the air you were allowed to breathe. A score of 90 meant luxury; a score of 10 meant the slums.

Nova was a 12.

She lived in the "Grey Zone," a concrete wasteland where the air was thick with industrial smog and the only currency was desperation. Nova was a "glitch"—a girl born with a neurological anomaly that made her invisible to the city's automated scoring sensors. To the system, she didn't exist. To the people of the Grey Zone, she was a ghost.

Nova spent her days scavenging for discarded tech, building a makeshift deck that could "ping" the city's network. She didn't want luxury; she wanted to understand why the system was designed to keep people like her in the dirt.

Through months of trial and error, Nova discovered a backdoor in the SUS algorithm. She found that the scores weren't based on "utility" at all, but on a complex set of behavioral biases designed to reward obedience and punish curiosity. The system wasn't measuring value; it was measuring submission.

Nova began to experiment. She created a "Score-Siphon," a device that could steal points from the high-scoring elite and redistribute them to the lowest members of the Grey Zone. For a few weeks, she became a secret goddess of the slums. A grandmother suddenly had enough points for medicine; a young boy got a ticket to a real school.

But the system had a failsafe.

The "Correction Bureau" detected the anomaly. They didn't send police; they sent a "Nullifier"—a specialized agent designed to erase the source of the glitch.

Nova tried to fight back. She attempted to upload a virus that would reset every score in the city to zero, creating a true equality. She believed that if everyone was a 0, the system would collapse and people would be forced to see each other as humans again.

She almost succeeded. The progress bar reached 98% just as the Nullifier breached her hideout.

The agent didn't kill her. He didn't even arrest her. He simply pressed a button on a handheld device.

Nova felt a sudden, violent tear in her consciousness. It wasn't physical pain, but a conceptual erasure. She watched as her name vanished from her own memory. She looked at her hands and forgot what they were for. She looked at the city and forgot why she had hated it.

The Nullifier had performed a "Social Deletion." He hadn't just lowered her score; he had removed her from the collective memory of the city.

Nova was left alive, but she was no longer a person. She was a "Zero." She wandered the streets of Omonoia, and people looked right through her, not because she was invisible, but because their brains were now programmed to ignore her existence. She could scream in the middle of a crowded plaza, and the world would continue its rhythmic, scored dance, undisturbed.

She spent the rest of her days as a living shadow, a reminder that in a world of numbers, the most dangerous thing you can be is a remainder.
