The Last Signal

(Dirty Realism Style)

The wind howled across the Nebraska flats, carrying the scent of dry dust and old iron. Elias sat in a rusted lawn chair outside a trailer that had long since lost its wheels. He was seventy, his skin like cracked leather, his hands shaking from a tremor he couldn't name.

Beside him sat the Box. It was a hunk of salvaged military gear and copper wire, a makeshift radio that he had spent ten years building.

The world had ended quietly. No bombs, no zombies. Just a slow fade. The crops stopped growing, the water turned bitter, and the people just... stopped. Most had walked into the wastes or slept their way into the dirt. Elias stayed because he had the Box.

He spent his days scanning the frequencies. He didn't look for government broadcasts or rescue ships. He looked for a pulse. A sign that something, anywhere, was still awake.

For a decade, there was nothing but static. The white noise of a dead universe.

Then, on a Tuesday in July, the Box chirped.

Elias froze. He leaned in, his breath hitching. It wasn't a voice, but a pattern. Three short bursts, three long, three short. SOS. But it wasn't coming from Earth. The signal was originating from a point in the Boötes Void, a place where there should be nothing for millions of light-years.

He spent three days and nights modulating the frequency, his eyes bloodshot, his heart hammering. He finally managed to send a simple reply: "I AM HERE."

He waited. He waited for a week. Then a month. Then a year.

One morning, the Box chirped again. A single, clear transmission, translated by the Box's rudimentary AI.

"WE ARE ALSO HERE. BUT WE ARE THE LAST."

Elias looked out at the gray horizon, at the dead cornfields and the silent sky. He realized that the universe was just a series of isolated rooms, and he had finally found someone else sitting in the dark.

He didn't feel hope. He didn't feel joy. He just felt a cold, sharp clarity. He reached out and turned the dial, cutting the power to the Box. He didn't want to hear the other person's silence.

He sat back in his chair and watched the sun set, a pale, sickly disc behind the dust, and for the first time in ten years, he felt completely and utterly alone.
