Vertical Futility

Employee 402 lived in a room that was exactly three meters by three meters. The walls were a shade of grey that the manual called 'Neutrality'. Every morning, at 06:00, a buzzer sounded, and 402 began his shift.

His job was simple. He was the Maintenance Officer for Level 402 of the Spire. The Spire was the only thing that existed—a vertical city of infinite proportions. 402's duty was to ensure that the ventilation grates were clear of dust and that the lighting panels flickered at the prescribed frequency.

He had never seen the bottom. He had never seen the top. He only knew the corridor of Level 402 and the two elevators that connected him to 401 and 403.

For twenty years, 402 had followed the rules. He ate the nutrient paste provided by the dispensers. He wore the grey jumpsuit. He slept for six hours.

Then, he found the note.

It was a small, yellowed piece of paper, wedged behind a lighting panel. It said: 'The top is real. Keep climbing.'

The note was not in the manual. The manual did not mention a 'top'. The manual stated that the Spire was the totality of existence.

402 did not report the note. Instead, he began to climb.

He used the service ladders, bypassing the elevators. He climbed through the maintenance shafts, past Level 500, Level 1000, Level 5000. He stopped eating the paste. He grew thin, his ribs protruding like the rungs of the ladder he climbed. His jumpsuit became a rag.

He climbed for ten years. He passed other employees, all of them staring blankly at their ventilation grates, their eyes devoid of anything but the manual.

"Where are you going?" one of them asked.

"To the top," 402 replied.

The employee looked at him with genuine confusion. "There is no top. There is only the shift."

But 402 continued. He climbed until the air became thin and the grey walls turned to white. He climbed until his fingers were raw and his heart beat like a dying bird.

Finally, he reached a door. It was a simple, white door with no handle. He pushed it open and stepped out.

He found himself in a small, white room. In the center of the room sat a single, black telephone. It began to ring.

402 picked up the receiver.

"Hello?" he whispered, his voice a dry rasp.

A recorded voice answered. It was flat, emotionless, and perfectly neutral. "Thank you for reaching the summit. Your request for a promotion has been received. Please return to Level 402 and await further instructions. Your shift begins in five minutes."

402 looked back at the door. He looked at the white room. Then, he sat down on the floor and waited for the buzzer to sound.
