The Neon Void

The rain in Los Angeles didn't fall; it collapsed, a heavy curtain of grey that blurred the neon signs of the Sunset Strip into bleeding smears of pink and blue. I sat in my office, the kind of place where the dust has its own zip code and the only thing that works is the bottle of rye in the bottom drawer.

She walked in at midnight, wearing a dress the color of a bruise and a look that said she'd already decided I was a loser. Her name was Elena, and she had a problem that smelled like old money and fresh blood.

"My husband left me a series of keys," she said, her voice a smoky contralto. "He said they open the 'Truth of the City.' He died before he could tell me where the locks were."

I took the case because the rent was three months overdue and I liked the way she smelled of jasmine and lies. For two weeks, I chased those keys through the underbelly of the city—from the high-stakes baccarat dens of Bel Air to the opium dens of Chinatown. Each key opened a locker, a safe, or a secret door, and each one contained a piece of a larger puzzle: the city's infrastructure was built on a foundation of systematic extortion, a secret pact between the mayor, the police chief, and the unions.

The final key led me to a vault beneath the City Hall. I expected to find a mountain of gold or a list of names. Instead, I found a single mirror and a recording.

The voice on the tape was Elena's husband. "To whoever finds this: the keys are a joke. There is no great conspiracy. There is only the fact that everyone in this city is already bought and paid for. The 'Truth' is that there is no truth left to find."

I looked up to see Elena standing in the doorway, a small silver pistol in her hand. She didn't look sad; she looked bored.

"You were a great distraction, detective," she said. "While you were playing with the keys, I was moving the actual assets."

She didn't kill me. She just left me in the vault, the door clicking shut with a finality that sounded like a coffin. I sat there in the dark, listening to the distant sound of the city humming, knowing that the only thing I'd successfully unlocked was the realization that I was the only man in LA who still believed in a mystery.
