The Shattered Reflection

The Castle of Mirrors sat atop a jagged peak of obsidian, its spires piercing a sky that was always the color of a fresh bruise. Elara lived in the Heart Gallery, a room where every wall, floor, and ceiling was a mirror.

She woke up to the sound of a distant chime. She looked into the mirror in front of her and saw a version of herself that was weeping. She looked into the mirror behind her and saw a version of herself that was laughing.

"Which one am I?" she whispered.

The Master of the Castle, a figure draped in shadows and silk, appeared in the reflection of the ceiling. "You are the sum of your fragments, Elara. Each loop is a new mirror. Each mirror is a new truth."

Elara hated the mirrors. She hated the way they multiplied her loneliness, turning a single tear into a thousand rivers of grief. She decided to break them.

She found a heavy iron candelabra and smashed the first mirror. The sound was a piercing shriek. As the glass shattered, a piece of the castle's west wing vanished into a void of white noise.

She didn't stop. She ran through the gallery, smashing every mirror she could find. *Crash. Shatter. Boom.* With every blow, the world around her began to disintegrate. The ceilings collapsed, the floors vanished, and the sky began to peel away like old wallpaper.

"Stop!" the Master screamed, his voice echoing from a thousand different directions. "You are not destroying your prison; you are destroying your existence!"

But Elara was consumed by a fever of liberation. She reached the final mirror—the Great Prism at the center of the castle. It held the image of the "Original Elara," a girl with eyes full of light and a heart that didn't know the meaning of a loop.

"I will be free!" Elara yelled, and she threw herself against the glass with all her strength.

The mirror didn't break. It absorbed her.

In an instant, Elara felt herself split. Not into two, or three, but into millions. She became the shards of glass. She became the reflections. She was no longer a girl; she was a kaleidoscope of a thousand different lives, all happening at once.

She saw herself as a queen, a beggar, a murderer, a saint. She saw her birth and her death in the same breath.

The Master of the Castle looked down at the floor, which was now covered in a sea of glittering fragments. He smiled.

"Perfect," he whispered. "A complete set."

He picked up a small shard of glass and held it to the light. Inside the shard, a tiny, microscopic Elara was still screaming, her voice a frequency too high for any human ear to hear.

The chime rang.

The mirrors reformed. The castle rebuilt itself.

Elara woke up. She looked into the mirror. She saw a version of herself that was weeping.
