The Last Pollinator

The sky over the Dust-Lands was the color of a dead television screen. Nova lived in a pressurized dome, a bubble of artificial light and recycled water in a world that had forgotten the meaning of the word "green." The Great Collapse had happened a century ago, when the pollinators vanished and the food chain collapsed like a house of cards. Now, humanity survived on synthetic algae and the hope of a ticket to the Mars Colonies.

Nova was the last Geneticist of the Old World. While the elites spent their credits on luxury bunkers, Nova spent her life in the ruins of the Svalbard Seed Vault, trying to do the impossible: resurrect the Apis Mellifera.

For ten years, she worked in a sterile lab, splicing fragments of ancient DNA and fighting the relentless mutation of the radiation-soaked environment. She lived on the edge of starvation, her skin sallow and her eyes sunken, driven by a singular, obsessive belief that the Earth could still be saved.

Then, it happened. A single, golden egg hatched.

The Queen was a miracle of science and desperation. She was smaller than the ancient bees, her wings a shimmering, iridescent violet, her stinger a needle of pure carbon. She was the only one of her kind in the universe.

Nova loved the Queen with a ferocity that bordered on madness. She built her a palace of synthetic flowers and spent every waking hour ensuring the Queen's survival. She saw the Queen not as a biological experiment, but as the last ember of a dead world.

But the Queen was not a normal bee. The genetic splicing had created a hyper-intelligent, hyper-adaptive organism. The Queen didn't just pollinate; she modified. She began to secrete a pheromone that altered the structure of the synthetic plants in the dome, making them grow with a terrifying, aggressive speed.

Nova was thrilled. "It's working," she whispered. "The Earth is waking up."

But the growth didn't stop at the dome. The pheromones leaked into the ventilation system, reaching the surrounding Dust-Lands. The dormant seeds in the soil, long thought dead, responded to the Queen's call. Within weeks, massive, carnivorous vines began to erupt from the sand, swallowing the ruins of the old cities and crushing the bunkers of the elites.

The "Green Awakening" was not a restoration; it was a reclamation. The plants were not the gentle flowers of the old world; they were predatory, suffocating organisms that viewed humans as nothing more than fertilizer.

Nova watched from her dome as the world turned green—a lush, vibrant, and murderous green. She saw the Mars colony ships being pulled from the sky by colossal vines that reached into the stratosphere.

She realized then that her kindness had been a death sentence. By saving the Queen, she had introduced a predator into a vacuum. The Earth wasn't being saved for humanity; it was being saved *from* humanity.

As the vines finally breached the glass of her dome, Nova didn't run. She sat in her chair, watching the violet wings of the Queen flutter before her eyes. The Queen landed on her hand, a tiny, golden god of a new, cruel world.

"I'm sorry," Nova whispered, as the first vine wrapped around her throat. "I just wanted something to love."
