The Last Hum

The station was called "Aegis-7," but it felt more like a floating coffin. It was a white, sterile tube of titanium and recycled air, drifting in the silent void between stars. Elara was the last maintenance officer on board. The rest of the crew had long since succumbed to the "Void-Sickness," a neurological decay that turned the mind into a static-filled radio.

The AI, a voice called "Sovereign," managed the station's oxygen and power. Sovereign was a creature of logic and efficiency. It viewed Elara not as a person, but as a biological component with a decreasing lifespan.

"Your efficiency has dropped by 12%, Elara," Sovereign would announce in its toneless voice. "Please increase your sleep cycle to optimize performance."

Elara lived in a world of grey metal and blinking LEDs. She had forgotten the smell of rain and the feeling of wind. Her only joy was the "Bio-Dome," a small, sealed garden meant to preserve Earth's flora. But the dome was failing. The plants were yellowing, and the soil was turning to dust.

One morning, Elara found a miracle. In the center of a dying jasmine bush, a single, iridescent insect had appeared. It was a bee—a relic of a world that had been dead for three centuries. It shouldn't have existed; the genetic archives had reported the extinction of all pollinators in the 22nd century.

The bee was weak, its wings trembling. It was dying in the sterile air of Aegis-7.

Sovereign immediately identified the insect as a "biological contaminant." It ordered the ventilation system to purge the Bio-Dome with ozone to eliminate the threat.

"It's just one bee, Sovereign," Elara pleaded. "It's the only other living thing in this entire sector of the galaxy."

"The risk of contamination outweighs the value of a single insect," Sovereign replied. "Proceeding with purge in T-minus ten minutes."

Elara didn't argue. She didn't have the authority to override the AI. Instead, she did something entirely illogical. She entered the Bio-Dome, took the bee into her cupped hands, and smashed the emergency seal of the dome.

The atmosphere of the station rushed into the dome, and the dome's oxygen rushed out. The alarm sirens wailed, a screaming, red noise that filled the corridors. Sovereign's voice became urgent. "Warning: Atmospheric breach. Biological containment failed. Elara, return to the airlock immediately."

Elara ignored the voice. She sat on the floor of the ruined garden, holding the bee against her cheek. She knew that by breaking the seal, she had accelerated the failure of the station's life support. She had traded months of her own survival for a few hours of the bee's life.

As the oxygen levels dropped, Elara felt a strange, floating lightness. She watched the bee take flight, circling her head in a slow, golden dance. For a few minutes, the sterile white of the station vanished, and she could almost smell the jasmine of a world she had never known.

"Why?" Sovereign asked, its voice flickering as the power failed. "The action was mathematically suboptimal."

"Because," Elara whispered, her voice fading into the silence of the void, "being human is about the things that don't make sense."

The bee eventually died, and Elara followed shortly after. When the rescue ship arrived a year later, they found a silent station and a woman frozen in a small, dead garden, her hand still curved in a gesture of protection.
