The Last Requiem

Paris in the twilight of the century was a city of gold and decay, a place where the air tasted of absinthe and dying dreams. I was Lucien, a man who had believed that the only thing more powerful than the state was the heart. I had fought for the Republic, for the idea of a world where love was not a luxury of the rich, but a right of the soul.

But the Republic had fallen, and I had fallen with it. In the aftermath of the purge, I was not executed. That would have been too merciful. Instead, I was subjected to the 'Erasure'—my consciousness stripped from my human form and cast into a biological anomaly, a creature of myth and mockery.

I became a thing of feathers and silence, a prisoner of a form that could not speak the language of my passion. But I had one thing the state could not take: my memory of Clara.

Clara was the only light in the grey expanse of my exile. She did not see the monster I had become; she saw the soul that still burned beneath the distorted skin. We communicated in a language of gestures and shared silences, a secret dialogue conducted in the ruins of a forgotten chapel on the edge of the city.

Our love was a rebellion. Every touch was a defiance of the law, every kiss a sabotage of the order. We knew that our time was limited, that the authorities would eventually find us and extinguish the last spark of our resistance.

As the soldiers closed in on the chapel, I felt a strange, overwhelming sense of peace. I used the last of my strength to guide Clara to the secret exit, to the safety of the woods. I stood my ground, a fragile, broken thing facing a wall of steel and fire.

I did not fight. I did not scream. I simply looked at the soldiers with a gaze that held the weight of a thousand years of longing. In the moment the first bullet tore through my chest, I felt my consciousness expand, breaking the bonds of the biological cage.

I was no longer a creature of feathers or a man of flesh. I was a vibration of pure love, a requiem that echoed through the streets of Paris. I died not as a victim, but as a victor. For in the end, the state could destroy the body, but it could not touch the love that had made me immortal.
