The Void of Order

The camp was a collection of rusted shipping containers and mud-caked tents on the edge of a nameless border town. It smelled of diesel, stale cigarettes, and unwashed bodies. Elias, a man whose eyes were two burnt-out holes in a face of leather, tried to run the place. He had been a Colonel once, in a war that had ended twenty years ago, but he still wore the ghost of his uniform.

He spent his days screaming at the recruits—desperate men who had fled their homes or were running from their debts. He tried to teach them the 'Standard Operating Procedure.' He wanted them to march, to pivot, to exist as a single, mindless organism.

"Order is the only thing that keeps the dark out," Elias would bark, though he didn't believe it anymore.

Two of the men, Jax and Miller, didn't care about the dark. They were survivors of a different kind of war—the kind fought in the gutters. They treated Elias's drills with a casual, cruel indifference. During the morning formation, while the other men stood shivering in the rain, Jax and Miller leaned against a container, sharing a cigarette and laughing at the absurdity of a man trying to build an army out of trash.

Elias didn't argue. He didn't scream. He just walked over to them with a heavy, industrial bolt-cutter.

The execution was quick, clumsy, and devoid of any dignity. There was no ritual, no speech, no 'Greater Good.' Just the sound of metal meeting bone and the wet thud of bodies hitting the mud.

Elias stood over them, the rain washing the blood off his boots. He looked at the remaining recruits. They were staring at him, their faces blank, their spirits already broken. They began to march. They pivoted. They obeyed.

But as Elias watched them, he didn't feel the satisfaction of a commander. He felt a sudden, yawning void in his stomach. He realized that the order he had created was a lie. He hadn't built an army; he had just created a group of terrified animals.

He looked at his hands, shaking in the cold. He had traded the chaos of the world for the silence of the grave, and in the end, the silence was louder. He sat down in the mud next to the bodies, lit a cigarette, and watched the grey sky, wondering why he had bothered to pretend that any of this mattered.
