The Bard's Requiem

The Kingdom of Valerius was a land of fading gold and rising blood, a place where the old laws were being rewritten by the swords of the ambitious. Cain was a ghost of a nobleman, a man whose lineage had been stripped away by a royal decree. He lived as a sentinel on the frozen northern border, enduring the casual brutality of Governor Marcus.

The Bard was the only one who saw the spark in Cain's eyes. He was a traveler of a thousand roads, a collector of secrets and songs. He spent his nights in the border camps, teaching Cain that loyalty was not a chain, but a choice.

"The world forgets the man," the Bard would whisper, "but it never forgets the song."

Marcus was a man of iron and ego. He viewed the border as his personal fiefdom and Cain as his favorite toy. In a fit of political paranoia, Marcus accused Cain of conspiring with the enemy. He didn't hold a trial; he held an execution. Cain died on a winter morning, his eyes fixed on the horizon, his silence a final act of defiance.

The Bard did not weep. He began to compose.

He didn't use a blade to strike Marcus; he used a melody. He traveled from village to village, from tavern to court, singing the "Song of the Fallen Sentinel." He didn't just tell a story of death; he crafted a myth of betrayal and stolen honor. He turned Cain into a symbol of every injustice the people had suffered under Marcus's rule.

The revenge was a slow-burning fire. The song became a fever, a whispered truth that infected the barracks and the banquet halls. Marcus found himself ruling a land that smiled to his face but sang of his crimes in the dark. He became a prisoner of his own palace, convinced that every shadow held a singer.

The end came during the Feast of the Solstice. As Marcus stood to deliver his address, the music stopped. A single voice began to sing the Requiem of Cain. The song acted as a signal. The soldiers, the servants, and the nobility—all of them had been touched by the song.

In a wave of sudden, collective clarity, the palace guards stepped aside. The people didn't storm the gates; they simply stopped obeying. Marcus, stripped of his power by a melody, was led to the same frozen square where Cain had died. He was not executed by a sword, but by the absolute silence of a thousand people who no longer recognized him as their master.

The Bard watched from the city walls, his lute resting against his shoulder. He didn't smile. He simply turned his face to the wind and began a new song.
