The Fourth Paper

The call came on a Tuesday. Lee was in his apartment. He finished the pipe. He drove to the house.

His brother was dead. Mark. Forty-five. Heart attack. Grading papers. Red pen.

The house was small. Neat. Mark's tools in the garage. His suit in the closet. Crossword puzzle on the table. Pencil across it.

Patrick was in the kitchen. Sixteen. Eating cereal from an unwashed bowl.

"You Lee?"

"Yeah."

"You my guardian now?"

Lee looked at the boy. At the bowl. At the life Mark had built. At the mess Lee couldn't clean.

"I guess I am."

Patrick shrugged. "I don't need a guardian."

"Everybody needs one."

The will was simple. House. Savings. Garden tools. Patrick.

That night, Lee couldn't sleep. He lay in Mark's bed. Listened to the wind. Closed his eyes. Saw fire.

Five years ago. Drunk. Kitchen fire. Whiskey. Pub. Floorboards burning. Three children dead.

Susan left. Suitcase. Kissed the children. Walked out. Never looked back.

Six months later. Police station. Gun. Head. Sergeant tackled him. Screamed. Begged. They held him down. Sent him to a doctor. Prescribed pills. Took them. Lived.

"You look like him," Patrick said on the third morning.

"Like my brother?"

"Like someone who's seen things."

Lee set down his cup. "You want to leave?"

"I want to leave everything."

The town was small. Built on work. Fishing. Shipping. Tourism. Men aged early. Women earlier. Children learned early.

Lee found work at the hardware store. Pipes and plumbing. Hargreaves, the owner, lost two brothers. Took to Lee quickly. Didn't talk about the past. Didn't need to.

It found him on a rainy Thursday. Susan. In the doorway. Older. Thinner. Hair pulled back. Fine wool coat.

"Lee."

He couldn't speak.

"I heard about Mark. I'm sorry."

"He was a good man."

She nodded. "He was." Pause. Five years of silence. "I have children now. Two. Boy and girl."

He nodded.

"They don't know. About you. About that night."

Lee looked at his hands. "That's for the best."

"Yes."

She stood there. Wanted to say more. Words weren't something either of them had enough of.

When she left, Lee stood in the rain. Watched her walk away. She didn't turn back. Neither would he.

Patrick wanted to leave. Applied to a technical college in Boston. Accepted. Showed Lee the letter. Defiance and fear.

"You should go."

"I know."

"But you don't have to."

Patrick looked at him. "What do you mean?"

Lee thought about saying more. About being trapped. Walls closing in. No door. Didn't. Shook his head.

"Do what you think is right."

Patrick left in October. Lee watched the bus disappear into the fog. Felt something that was not grief. Not happiness. Something quieter. Honest. Acceptance.

Returned to the house. Sat in Mark's study. Looked at books. Picked one at random. Poetry. Opened to a marked page.

The wound is the place where the light enters you.

Closed the book. Placed it back. Outside, fog lifting. Sea visible. Grey. Vast. Indifferent.

For the first time in five years, Lee Chandler did not look away.

Couldn't fix it. Could live with it. That was all.
