The White Room

The room had no corners. It was a sphere of blinding, sterile white, illuminated by a light that had no source. There was no clock, no window, and no memory of a name. I was Subject-01. I had been told that there was another—Subject-02—and that if I could prove my "stability," I would be allowed to meet her.

The test was simple: Silence.

For three cycles, I sat on a white plastic chair. The "Interrogators" never spoke. They used frequencies that made my teeth ache, flashes of light that burned my retinas, and a subtle, chemical scent that induced a state of waking paralysis. They wanted a sound. A moan, a sob, a single word of protest.

In the first cycle, I fought. I screamed internally, a silent roar that shook the foundations of my being. I imagined the world outside—the smell of rain, the grit of sand, the warmth of a human hand. I held onto these images like anchors in a white sea.

In the second cycle, the images began to fade. I forgot the color of the sky. I forgot the sound of my own voice. I became a part of the room, a white shadow in a white void. The pain became an abstraction, a data point in a ledger I could no longer read.

By the third cycle, I had achieved a state of perfect equilibrium. I was no longer fighting the silence; I was the silence. I felt a strange, cold peace. I didn't care about Subject-02. I didn't care about the world. I only cared about the purity of the void.

When the door finally opened, a man in a white coat looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and disappointment. "Congratulations, 01. You are the first to reach absolute stability. You may now meet Subject-02."

He led me to a second room. It was identical to the first. In the center sat a chair, and on the chair was a mirror.

I looked into the mirror and saw myself. There was no Subject-02. There had never been a Subject-02. The "other" was merely a projection, a carrot dangled before a donkey to test the limits of its endurance.

I sat down in the chair and closed my eyes. I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel betrayal. I only felt a profound, crystalline clarity. I had spent my entire existence trying to reach another person, only to discover that in this world, the only thing that truly exists is the void.

I waited for the door to close, and for the silence to return.
