The Rusting Heart

The town of Oakhaven was a place where the clocks had stopped in 1974. The air smelled of wet iron and stale beer. Cal spent his days at the Texaco station, pumping gas for people who looked like they had been carved out of the same grey stone as the sidewalk.

He didn't think about his life; he just endured it. Old Joe, a man who lived in a trailer and drank rye like it was water, was the only person who talked to him. Joe didn't offer advice; he offered observations. "Life is just a series of things breaking, Cal. The trick is to not be the thing that breaks."

Then Sean came back.

Sean had been the only person who had ever seen Cal as something other than a local fixture. In high school, they had spent hours in the back of Sean's old Ford, talking about leaving, about cities with lights that didn't flicker. Then Sean had left. He had actually done it.

Now, Sean was back, working as a pharmacist in the town's only drugstore. He wore a white coat and spoke with a measured, professional tone. He looked like he belonged in a different zip code.

They met at the local diner, the kind of place where the coffee tasted like battery acid and the waitress knew everyone's sins.

"It's good to see you, Cal," Sean said. He reached across the table to touch Cal's hand, but Cal pulled away. The gesture felt foreign, a relic from a language Cal no longer spoke.

They spent the afternoon walking through the ruins of the town—the closed mill, the overgrown park, the cinema that had become a laundromat. They tried to talk about the past, but the words felt clunky and wrong. Every time they touched upon a memory, it felt like they were trying to start a car with a dead battery.

"I missed you," Sean whispered as they stood by the river, the water a murky brown.

"I don't know who you're missing," Cal replied. "That kid is gone. I'm just the guy who pumps gas."

Sean tried to hug him, a sudden, desperate movement. Cal stood still, his arms at his sides. He felt Sean's heart beating against his chest, and for a second, he felt a flicker of something—a ghost of a longing. But then he remembered the smell of the gas station, the weight of the grey sky, and the absolute certainty that nothing ever changed in Oakhaven.

He stepped back, breaking the contact.

"I have to get back to the store," Sean said, his voice flat.

"Yeah," Cal replied. "I've got a shift at six."

They walked back to their cars in silence. As Cal drove away, he looked in the rearview mirror and saw Sean standing alone in the middle of the road, a small, white figure against a landscape of rust. Cal turned up the radio to drown out the silence, and he didn't look back.
