The air in the OmniCorp containment cell was filtered, sterile, and smelled of ozone. I watched him through the reinforced glass. Julian. My brother-in-arms. My mirror. I, Kael, had always been the one who didn't blink. I believed that loyalty was the only currency that didn't depreciate. To me, the mission was everything; the man was nothing.

The first act was the moment of the break. We had been captured together during the infiltration of the Sector 7 hub. We were chained to the same cold floor, the interrogators circling us like sharks. I had already accepted my death; I could feel the peace of it, the clean line of a final sacrifice. But Julian... Julian started to shake. I watched the exact moment his spirit snapped. It wasn't a loud break; it was a soft, wet sound, like a piece of fruit being crushed. He surrendered. He didn't just give up the codes; he begged for his life.

The undercurrent was the study of the fallen. I was kept alive as a contrast, a psychological tool to shame Julian into giving more. I spent weeks watching him through the glass. I watched him eat the food the enemy gave him with a desperate, animal hunger. I watched him try to catch my eye, his expression a mixture of shame and a terrifying, pleading hope that I would tell him it was okay. I never did. I looked at him and saw a stranger wearing my friend's skin.

The explosion was the release. Julian was "rehabilitated" and integrated into the enemy's administration. He became their puppet, a polished version of himself, wearing a suit that cost more than my life. On the day of my execution, he came to visit me. He stood behind the glass, smelling of expensive cologne and fear. He told me he had "saved" us both by cooperating. He looked at me with a pity that felt like a physical blow.

The echo was the final clarity. As the needle entered my vein, I looked at Julian one last time. He was crying, but they were the tears of a man who had forgotten why he was sad. I felt a sudden, piercing surge of triumph. I was dying, yes, but I was dying as a whole entity. Julian was living, but he was living as a collection of fragments, held together by the will of his masters.

I closed my eyes, and the last thing I saw was Julian's reflection in the glass—a hollow man, forever trapped in the gaze of a dead man who knew the truth.
