The Final Cut

The room was a concrete box, lit by a single, flickering fluorescent tube that hummed like a dying insect. In the center sat a heavy iron chair, bolted to the floor. Viktor, a man whose soul had been bleached white by years of survival in the Ministry of Silence, held the razor. His hands were steady, but his heart was a cold stone.

In the chair sat Colonel Draken, a man who had made a career out of disappearing people. Draken didn't believe in mercy; he believed in the absolute authority of the State. He had forced Viktor to serve as his personal barber, a twisted game of dominance where the man who held the blade was the only one who felt the fear.

"Faster, Viktor," Draken hissed, his voice a sandpaper rasp. "I have a parade to attend. I cannot be seen with the remnants of a peasant's cut."

Viktor didn't speak. He couldn't. In this room, speech was a liability. He focused on the skin of Draken's scalp, the pale, sickly flesh of a man who lived in the shadows. As he worked, Viktor remembered the face of his brother, taken in a midnight raid three years ago. He remembered the silence that followed.

He began to shave, but the strokes were different today. He wasn't just cleaning the skin; he was marking a target. He carved a series of small, precise notches into the hairline—a code used by the resistance, a signal that the 'Wolf' was marked for the kill.

As the final cut was made, Viktor felt a surge of adrenaline that nearly broke his composure. He had just signed Draken's death warrant. The moment the Colonel stepped into the light of the parade, the snipers in the clock tower would see the mark.

"Done," Viktor whispered.

Draken stood up and looked in the mirror. He didn't see the marks; they were too subtle, hidden in the natural folds of his skin. He smiled, a predatory expression that made Viktor's skin crawl.

"You've finally learned your place, Viktor," Draken said, patting him on the shoulder with a heavy, calloused hand. "Perhaps I'll let you live another month."

Viktor bowed his head, the perfect image of a broken man. But inside, he was screaming with triumph. He knew that the clock was ticking. The razor had done what a thousand protests could not.

As Draken walked out of the room, his boots clicking on the concrete, Viktor looked at the razor. It was stained with a tiny drop of blood. He didn't wipe it away. He held it like a holy relic, waiting for the sound of the first shot to echo through the city.
