Title: The Neon Stain

The rain in this city doesn't wash anything away; it just moves the filth from one alley to another. I hung there, bound to a cross of flickering neon tubes that buzzed with a low, irritating frequency. The light was a sickly shade of magenta, casting long, distorted shadows against the brick walls of the dead-end street.

I was once Detective Marlowe. I had a badge, a bottle of cheap rye, and a moral code that was as frayed as my trench coat. Now, I was a "Soul Collector," a spectral scavenger nailed to a light-fixture, waiting for the feast.

The target was a man named Vane. He was a corporate shark in a three-thousand-dollar suit, the kind of man who sold his own mother for a percentage point in a merger. He had come to the alley to perform a "cleansing"—a ritual to swap his guilt-ridden soul for a blank slate, a fresh start bought with the blood of a dozen innocents.

I didn't care about the morality of it. I was hungry. The hunger was a physical thing, a void in my chest that felt like a black hole.

When the ritual peaked, I reached out. I didn't just mediate the swap; I intercepted it. As Vane's soul surged toward the vessel, I opened my maw and swallowed it whole.

The sensation was electric. It was like drinking a gallon of liquid lightning. I felt Vane's power, his confidence, his ruthless ambition. I felt the way he viewed people as assets to be liquidated.

But then came the stain.

Along with the power came the memories. I saw the faces of the people he had destroyed. I felt the coldness of his heart, the absolute lack of empathy. And as the soul merged with mine, I felt my own remaining humanity being pushed aside, crowded out by Vane's overwhelming narcissism.

I looked down at my hands. They were still spectral, but they were changing. The magenta light of the neon cross was being replaced by a cold, predatory gold.

I could feel the hunger returning, but it was different now. I no longer wanted just any soul. I wanted power. I wanted the city.

I laughed, and the sound was no longer my own. It was Vane's laugh—sharp, arrogant, and devoid of any warmth. I was no longer a detective hunting monsters. I was the monster, and the city was my hunting ground.

The rain continued to fall, but the magenta light had gone out. In its place was a gold glow that promised nothing but a more efficient kind of cruelty.
