The Grey Horizon

The wind in the Rust Belt didn't blow; it scraped. It scraped the paint off the rotting porches and the hope off the faces of the people in Oakhaven. Frank sat on his porch, a bottle of cheap rye in his hand, watching the skeletal remains of the steel mill loom over the town like a dead god.

Sarah had been the only thing in Oakhaven that didn't smell of rust. She was nineteen, with a laugh that could pierce through a blizzard and a sketchbook full of cities she had never seen. Frank, a former foreman who had lost everything in the Great Shutdown, had found in Sarah a reason to wake up. He had spent his last few thousand dollars—money meant for his own survival—to create a sanctuary for her in a small, rented cottage by the river.

He bought her paints. He bought her books. He tried to build a wall of beauty around her to keep the grey world out. For a while, it worked. They lived in a fragile, desperate bubble of love, two broken people trying to glue themselves together.

But the bubble burst when the bank finally came for the cottage.

The argument had lasted for hours, fueled by rye and the suffocating pressure of poverty. Frank, terrified of losing the only thing he had left, had turned his fear into rage. He had screamed at her for her "naive dreams," for her "useless art," for the way she looked at the horizon as if there were actually a way out.

In a moment of blind, alcohol-fueled fury, he had pushed her. Not hard, but enough. Sarah had fallen back, her head striking the sharp edge of the iron stove.

The silence that followed was the loudest thing Frank had ever heard.

He had stayed with her until the light left her eyes, whispering apologies that sounded like static. He had buried her in the frozen earth of the backyard, beneath the grey sky of a November morning.

For the next ten years, Frank lived in a loop of self-destruction. He drank to forget, then drank to remember, then drank because the remembering was the only thing that proved he was still alive. He stopped leaving the house. He stopped talking to the neighbors.

One winter evening, while cleaning out the attic, he found her sketchbook. He opened it to the last page. There was a drawing of him—not the angry, broken man he had become, but the man he had been when he first loved her. Underneath, she had written: *“Even in the grey, you are my only color.”*

Frank closed the book and looked out at the horizon. There was no color left. Just the grey, the rust, and the endless, freezing wind.
