The Disposable Blade

The rain in Manhattan didn't wash anything away; it just made the filth shine. Kane stood in the lobby of the Zenith Corporation, his reflection mirrored in the polished obsidian floors. He was wearing a charcoal suit that fit like a second skin, his expression a mask of professional indifference.

For seven years, Kane had been the "Apex Asset." He didn't exist on any payroll, didn't have a social security number, and didn't leave fingerprints. He was the man Zenith sent when a CEO needed to disappear, when a competitor's secret needed to be stolen, or when a political scandal needed to be buried in a shallow grave.

He had been the perfect blade: sharp, silent, and utterly loyal.

But the thing about being a blade is that eventually, you get dull. Or, more accurately, you become a liability.

Kane had just finished the "Sovereign Project," a brutal takeover of a rival tech firm that had left three people dead and a dozen others ruined. He expected a bonus, a promotion, or at least a nod of approval from the Board. Instead, he found his access badge deactivated.

He tried to enter his apartment, but the lock had been changed. He tried to access his offshore accounts, but the passwords were invalid. In the span of an hour, Kane had been erased from the world.

He sat in a diner in Midtown, watching the rain streak the windows. He realized that the "Apex Asset" was just a fancy term for a disposable tool. He had spent his life building a fortress for men who had already planned his execution.

The hit came at 3:00 AM.

They didn't use a professional; they used a squad of tactical drones, the kind of high-tech toys Zenith liked to show off at trade shows. Kane didn't fight back. He didn't run. He just sat in his car, parked under a flickering streetlamp, and watched the red targeting lasers dance across his chest.

He felt a strange, cold amusement. He had spent years eliminating "liabilities," and now, he was the final item on the list. The symmetry was almost poetic.

"Is this it?" he whispered to the empty car.

The drones fired simultaneously. There was no pain, only a sudden, blinding flash of white light and the smell of ozone.

Kane's body slumped against the steering wheel. As his consciousness faded, he saw the rain continuing to fall, washing the blood off the pavement, preparing the street for the next disposable blade to walk upon it.
