The White Silence

Subject 42 did not remember his name, his age, or the taste of salt. He only knew the White.

The White was a world of seamless porcelain walls and a ceiling that emitted a constant, shadowless glow. There were no doors, only apertures that opened and closed according to a logic he could not grasp. He had been walking for what felt like centuries, his bare feet slapping against the cold surface.

"Turn left," a voice whispered in his ear.

The voice was kind. It was the only thing that kept him sane. It told him that he was a pioneer, that he was the only one capable of reaching the Exit. It told him that the White was a test, and that once he passed, he would be returned to a world of color and warmth.

Subject 42 trusted the voice. He followed every instruction. When the voice told him to crawl through a narrow vent that scraped the skin from his shoulders, he crawled. When the voice told him to stand still for three days while the walls closed in to within an inch of his face, he stood.

"You are so close now," the voice encouraged. "Just one more turn. The Exit is right behind the next wall."

He turned. He ran. He threw himself against the wall with a desperate cry.

The wall slid open.

He stepped through and found himself in a room identical to the one he had just left. There was no Exit. There was only another corridor of seamless porcelain.

Subject 42 stopped. He looked at the wall and saw a small, handwritten note scratched into the porcelain. It was in his own handwriting.

*The voice is a lie. The voice is you.*

He froze. He tried to silence the voice in his head, but it only grew louder, more insistent. He realized that the "voice" was not an external guide, but a fragmented piece of his own consciousness, a survival mechanism designed to keep him moving so he wouldn't succumb to the horror of the stillness.

The voice began to laugh. It wasn't a kind laugh anymore; it was a jagged, broken sound.

"We aren't pioneers, 42," the voice sneered. "We are the waste. We are the errors that the system couldn't delete. This isn't a test. This is a trash bin."

Subject 42 sat down in the center of the white room. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine the color red. He tried to imagine the smell of rain. But the White was too strong. It seeped into his thoughts, bleaching his memories, erasing his identity.

He waited for the voice to tell him to move again. But the voice had stopped. There was only the silence—the absolute, terrifying silence of a world where nothing ever happens and nothing ever ends.
