The Glass Room

The room was small, windowless, and smelled of stale cigarettes and old sweat. A single bulb hung from the ceiling, casting a harsh, oscillating light that made the shadows dance on the concrete walls.

Detective Vance didn't use a rubber hose. He didn't need to. He used words. He used the silence between the words.

Across from him sat Miller, a corporate spy who thought he was the smartest man in the room. Miller was lean, dressed in a sharp grey suit that was now wrinkled and stained. He had a smirk that he wore like armor, a look of absolute certainty that he held the winning hand.

"You're wasting your time, Vance," Miller said, his voice a dry rasp. "I know where the files are. I know who paid me. And I know that you have nothing that can make me talk."

Vance didn't move. He just leaned back in his chair, the light flickering across his tired eyes. He took a long drag of his cigarette and exhaled a cloud of blue smoke that obscured Miller's face.

"I don't want the files, Miller," Vance said softly. "The files are irrelevant. The company already replaced them. The money you were promised? It's gone. Your handlers didn't just burn the bridge; they salted the earth."

Miller's smirk flickered. Just for a second.

"You're lying," Miller said, but the certainty was gone.

"Am I?" Vance leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I saw the manifests. Your 'extraction team' was redirected to a different sector three hours ago. You're not a secret agent anymore, Miller. You're a liability. And in this city, liabilities get erased."

Vance spent the next four hours dismantling Miller's identity. He didn't ask questions; he provided "facts." He told Miller about the fake death certificate already filed in his name. He told him about the way his organization had already painted him as a double agent.

He played on Miller's pride—the belief that he was too valuable to be discarded. He convinced Miller that the only way to survive was to prove his value to the only man who still had power in the room: Vance.

"Tell me the name of the contact," Vance whispered. "Not for the company. For yourself. Give me something I can use to keep you alive."

Miller broke. It wasn't a loud break; it was a quiet, pathetic collapse. He spilled everything—names, dates, locations—not because he was afraid of the pain, but because he was terrified of the silence.

As Vance walked out of the room, he didn't feel like a hero. He just felt tired. He had used the truth to tell a lie, and the lie had worked perfectly. He left Miller in the glass room, a man who had finally discovered that the only thing more dangerous than a secret is the belief that you are the only one who knows it.
