The Gilded Protocol

Julian Vane didn't just run a bootlegging operation; he curated it. In the neon-lit haze of 1924 New York, where the air smelled of ozone and expensive gin, Vane was an anomaly. He wore Savile Row suits to warehouse raids and spoke in the measured tones of a displaced duke.

"Class, Marcus," Vane would say to his lieutenant. "Power is nothing without the grace to wield it."

The conflict with the Moretti family had reached a fever pitch. The city was a tinderbox, and Vane held the match. He had tracked the Morettis to a derelict pier in Brooklyn, where their primary shipment of Canadian rye was being offloaded.

Then, the fluke happened.

A sudden structural collapse of the pier sent three of Moretti's trucks plunging into the harbor. The guards were in a panic, scrambling to save their cargo and their comrades. They were exposed, terrified, and completely unable to return fire.

"Now!" Marcus roared, his hand on the trigger of his Thompson. "They're sitting ducks, Julian! We take the shipment and the heads of the Moretti captains right now!"

Vane stepped forward, raising a gloved hand. He looked at the chaos with a flicker of distaste.

"Look at them, Marcus. They are in a state of absolute disarray. To fire now would be... gauche. It would be the act of a street thug, not a strategist."

"They're gangsters, Julian! Not tea guests!"

"Exactly," Vane replied, a thin smile touching his lips. "Which is why I shall show them what a true aristocrat looks like. We will wait. We will let them recover their dignity, reorganize their lines, and then we will defeat them in a fair contest of wills. That is how you earn a legacy."

Vane spent the next hour sipping a flask of cognac, watching the Morettis recover with the detached interest of a gallery visitor. He imagined the look on Don Moretti's face when he realized he had been spared out of sheer, overwhelming sophistication.

But the Morettis didn't feel gratitude. They felt a predatory curiosity. While Vane was admiring the "symmetry" of the situation, Moretti's reserves had already circled around the block.

The ambush was surgical. The first burst of gunfire didn't hit the shipment; it hit Vane's inner circle.

As the world dissolved into a blur of grey concrete and crimson blood, Vane found himself pinned against a brick wall. Don Moretti walked up to him, stepping over the body of Marcus.

"I heard about your 'courtesy', Vane," Moretti whispered, the smell of cheap cigars filling the air. "In this city, the only protocol that matters is who is left standing."

Vane tried to speak, to mention the "etiquette" of the encounter, but a single shot silenced the last vestige of his gilded world. He died as he had lived: perfectly dressed, and utterly delusional.
