The Last Embassy

The garden was a sanctuary of white marble and blue hydrangeas, located in the Neutral Zone—a sliver of land between the iron-grey borders of the Empire of Aethelgard and the Republic of Oros. It was the only place in the world where the soldiers of both nations could stand within ten paces of each other without drawing their swords.

Ambassador Vane of Aethelgard stood by the fountain, his uniform crisp, his expression a mask of diplomatic neutrality. He had organized the "Salon of Shared Heritage," a desperate attempt to remind both empires that they had once been a single people, sharing a single language and a single set of myths.

"If we can remember who we were," Vane told his guests, "we can decide who we want to be."

Beside him was Lady Isolde of Oros. She was a woman of sharp intellect and sharper ambitions. She smiled at Vane, but her eyes were calculating, measuring the distance between his ideals and his vulnerabilities.

The salon was a masterpiece of tension. The guests—generals, poets, and historians—spoke of the "Great Unification" of five centuries ago. They quoted ancient texts and shared stories of a time when the border was just a line on a map, not a wall of corpses.

For a few hours, it seemed to work. The air grew warmer, the voices softer. A general from Aethelgard and a strategist from Oros were seen laughing over a shared memory of a childhood folk song. Vane felt a surge of hope. Perhaps the cultural bridge was strong enough to hold the weight of two warring nations.

But the bridge was built on a fault line.

During the final session, a debate broke out over the interpretation of the "Treaty of the Silver Lake." A historian from Oros pointed out a single, overlooked clause that suggested Aethelgard had intentionally betrayed the unification centuries ago.

The shift was instantaneous. The laughter died. The shared heritage was suddenly reframed as a history of deception. The "common myths" became weapons, used to justify old hatreds.

"Your 'shared heritage' is a lie designed to make us forget our chains!" the historian screamed.

The tension that had been suppressed for hours exploded. The generals stopped laughing and began to reach for their sidearms. The poets stopped reciting and began to curse. The garden, once a symbol of peace, became a claustrophobic arena of mutual loathing.

Vane tried to intervene, his voice pleading for reason, but he was drowned out by the roar of ancient grievances. He realized that the more they remembered their shared past, the more they realized how deeply they had been betrayed.

As the guests stormed out of the garden, a distant sound echoed through the valley. It was a low, rhythmic thumping that shook the marble statues.

Vane looked toward the horizon. The sky was turning a bruised orange. The first artillery shells of the war were falling on the border towns.

He stood alone in the garden, surrounded by the abandoned champagne glasses and the scattered papers of a failed peace. The "Salon of Shared Heritage" had not prevented the war; it had provided the final justification for it.

Vane reached down and picked up a single blue hydrangea, its petals crushed. He realized then that some bridges are not meant to be crossed—they are meant to be burned to ensure the enemy can never follow.
