The Spoon

The man had a large spoon. The spoon was old, with a nick in the edge. He used it to make soup.

One day, he made too much soup. He could not finish it alone. He took it to the street. He used the spoon to give soup to people who passed by.

Each person received just enough to be full.

Someone asked him how he did it.

The man said: I do not know. Maybe the pot is good. Maybe the soup is right. Maybe it is coincidence.

Another person heard about this. He also made a pot of soup. But he made only a little. He used the same spoon to serve.

Each person received only one mouthful.

He asked the man: Why does your spoon not work?

The man looked at his pot. He said: Your pot has only a little soup.

They stood in silence for a while.

There was nobody on the street. The wind was strong.

The other man said: I thought the spoon had something special.

The man said: The spoon is just a spoon.

The other man thought about it. He said: Then what is sharing?

The man put the spoon into the pot. He said: You decide.

The other man left.

The man continued to make soup. The soup in the pot was neither much nor little. He stirred it with the spoon. The spoon touched the side of the pot and made a sound.

He listened to the sound. He thought for a while. Then he continued to stir.

The pot sat on the stove. The spoon rested inside. The soup was warm.

A woman passed by the window. She stopped. She looked at the pot. She looked at the man.

She did not ask for soup. She did not ask about the spoon. She simply stood there for a moment, watching.

The man did not look up. He continued to stir.

The spoon touched the side of the pot. Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.

The woman turned and walked away.

The man continued to stir.

The soup did not run out. It never ran out. Not because the spoon was magical. Not because the pot was special.

Because sometimes, a pot of soup is just a pot of soup. And a spoon is just a spoon.

And sharing is whatever you decide it is.

The man stirred. The spoon scraped. The soup stayed warm.

Outside, the wind blew. The street was empty. The pot was full.

He stirred again.
