The White Room Echoes

Director Thorne believed in the purity of the cure. In the sterile, white corridors of the Aethelgard Institute, tucked away in the frozen silence of the Swiss Alps, Thorne reigned as the architect of sanity. His target was "Ward 9," a group of patients who had developed a collective delusion of "The Outside"—a belief that the world beyond the institute's walls had ceased to exist.

To Thorne, this delusion was a failure of his methodology. He didn't want to help them; he wanted to prove them wrong.

The first "treatment" was a series of sensory deprivation exercises. Thorne locked the patients in white rooms with no sound and no light, intending to break their collective bond and force them to rely on his voice as their only source of truth. He expected them to beg for his guidance. Instead, they began to synchronize.

Thorne noticed that the patients had started humming a low, rhythmic tone in unison. Even in separate rooms, the frequency was identical. The hum bypassed the walls, vibrating through the floors and into Thorne's own bones. He found himself unable to sleep, the sound echoing in his mind like a countdown.

He intensified the regime. He introduced chemical stimulants and sleep deprivation, pushing the patients to the brink of collapse. He believed that by destroying their bodies, he could liberate their minds.

But the more he pushed, the more the "Outside" became a reality for Thorne. He began to see things in the periphery of his vision—shadows of forests and oceans in the middle of the white corridors. He started hearing the humming not as a sound, but as a command.

The final collapse happened during the Great Audit. Thorne gathered the patients in the central hall to demonstrate their "recovery" to the board of directors. As he began to speak, the patients all looked at him with a terrifying, vacant smile.

"You're still in the room, Director," they whispered in unison.

Thorne looked around. The board members were gone. The walls were gone. He was standing in a vast, empty white void that stretched infinitely in every direction. He tried to scream, but his voice was just another layer of the humming.

He realized then that the patients hadn't been delusional. They had simply found the exit. Thorne, in his obsession with the cure, had become the only patient left in the asylum.
