The Rot in the Root

The air in the Blackwood Manor didn't move; it stagnated, smelling of damp earth and a century of repressed grief. I am Elias. I arrived at the manor on a Tuesday, carrying a suitcase and a secret that felt like a stone in my throat. The house was a skeletal thing, its grey stones weeping moss, its windows like cataracts on a dying giant.

Colt Blackwood was the master of the house. He was a man who looked like he had been carved from a piece of old, bitter oak. He spent his days pacing the library, guarding a collection of journals and relics that he claimed were the only things keeping the family's "curse" at bay. He was a man of absolute, terrifying conviction.

I didn't want his relics. I wanted the truth about the land. I spent weeks befriending him, playing the role of the curious historian, the man who respected the weight of the past. I learned the rhythms of his paranoia—how he locked the doors at sunset, how he spoke to the portraits of his ancestors as if they were still breathing.

The trap was a matter of timing and temptation. I discovered that Colt’s loyalty was not to the family, but to a specific, imagined version of his grandfather’s honor. I forged a letter, a desperate plea from a "lost" relative claiming to have found the missing piece of the family's redemption.

I led him to the cellar, a place where the walls were slick with a black, oily substance. The descent was a slow crawl through the history of the Blackwood madness. As we reached the lowest vault, the air became thick, almost liquid.

"It's here," I whispered, pointing to a rusted iron door.

As soon as Colt stepped through the threshold, I slammed the door shut and turned the heavy bolt. The sound echoed through the cellar like a gunshot.

Colt didn't scream. He didn't bang on the door. He just stood there, in the dark, and started to laugh. It was a dry, rattling sound that made the hair on my neck stand up.

"You think you've captured me, Elias?" his voice drifted through the iron. "You've only joined me. This house doesn't have a master. It has a hunger. And now, you're the only one left to feed it."

I stood in the silence of the cellar, the key heavy in my hand. I had won. I had the manor, the land, and the secrets. But as I looked at the door, I realized that the lock didn't just keep Colt in. It kept the rest of the world out. And I was now the only one left in the dark.
