The Long Shadow

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just turned the grime into a mirror. I sat in the back of the Starlight Lounge, watching Vivian. She was wearing a dress the color of a bruised plum, dancing for men who thought their money could buy the soul of a woman.

I'm Sam. I'm a private eye, which is a fancy way of saying I get paid to look at things people want to hide. Big Al had hired me to "manage" Vivian. In Al's world, management meant making sure she didn't talk to the wrong people and that she stayed exactly where he wanted her.

But Vivian wasn't the kind of girl who stayed put. She had a mind like a razor and a heart like a locked safe.

"Sam," she whispered, leaning in close enough for me to smell the vanilla and desperation. "I'm tired of being a ghost in Al's machine."

I knew the play. Usually, it ends with a bullet in a dark alley. But Vivian had a different plan. She didn't want a savior; she wanted a distraction.

"I know a guy," I told her. "Detective Miller. He's a Boy Scout in a city of wolves. He believes in the Law with a capital L. If we can make him believe you're a key witness in a federal case against Al, he'll pull you out of here faster than a trigger pull."

The plan was a delicate piece of clockwork. I spent two weeks forging documents—letters from nonexistent lawyers, fake affidavits, and a trail of breadcrumbs that led straight to Big Al's offshore accounts. I didn't do it for the money; I did it because I wanted to see the look on Al's face when his favorite toy walked out the front door with a police escort.

The night of the "rescue" was a blur of sirens and shouting. Miller, true to form, stormed into the lounge with a warrant and a sense of righteous indignation. He swept Vivian out of the club, treating her like a piece of fragile evidence.

As we drove away, I looked at Vivian in the rearview mirror. She wasn't crying. She wasn't shaking. She was smiling.

"Thanks, Sam," she said, her voice cold and clear. "You played your part perfectly."

That's when I realized I wasn't the director of this movie; I was just another extra. Vivian hadn't just used me to get Miller's help; she had used the entire situation to steal the encryption keys to Al's digital ledger while I was busy "managing" the distraction.

By the time Miller realized the "federal case" was a phantom, Vivian was gone. She hadn't just escaped the club; she had robbed the man who owned it and the man who tried to save her.

I sat in my office, the neon sign outside flickering like a dying heart. I poured myself a drink and toasted to the girl in the plum dress. In this city, the only way to win is to make sure you're the one holding the cards.
