# Style: Dirty Realism

The water didn't leave. It just turned a thick, oily brown and stayed, turning the town of Blackwood into a series of isolated islands of rotting wood and rusted tin.

Four of them were left on the roof of the old feed store. There was Miller, who had lost his legs in the war; Hattie, who clutched a wet photograph of a child; a man they called Slim; and the narrator, who had forgotten his own name three days ago.

They didn't talk about the past. The past was under ten feet of water, along with the banks, the church, and the cemetery. They only talked about the bread.

There was one piece of sourdough left, a hard, grey crust that sat on a piece of plastic sheeting. It was the only thing keeping them from the void.

"I saw a boat," Slim whispered. His eyes were bloodshot, his skin a pale, translucent yellow. "Two miles east. A white motorboat."

"You've said that every hour for two days," Hattie replied. Her voice was a dry rasp.

"I saw it this time! I swear on my mother's grave!"

They all looked east. There was nothing but the flat, shimmering expanse of the flood, reflecting a sky the color of a bruised plum. No boats. No helicopters. Just the sound of something heavy splashing in the distance—perhaps a dead cow, perhaps a neighbor.

As the sun began to set, the wind shifted, bringing the smell of decay. Miller started to cough, a wet, rattling sound that seemed to vibrate through the roof. He looked at the bread, then at the others.

"Give it to the girl," Miller whispered, nodding toward Hattie.

"I'm not a girl," Hattie said flatly. "I'm forty-two."

"Whatever," Miller wheezed. "Just... give it to her."

Slim didn't wait for the bread to be handed over. In a sudden, violent motion, he lunged forward, his thin fingers clawing at the plastic. There was a brief, desperate struggle—the sound of fabric tearing and a muffled grunt. Slim ended up with the bread, but he had pushed Miller.

Miller didn't scream. He simply slid off the edge of the roof with a soft, wet thud.

The three of them watched the ripples expand and then vanish. Slim began to eat the bread, chewing slowly, his eyes fixed on the horizon. He didn't offer a piece to anyone. He didn't even look at them.

The narrator lay back and watched the first star appear in the purple sky. He felt a strange sense of relief. The struggle was over. The hunger was still there, but the hope—that agonizing, itching hope—had finally drowned.
